Colt tends to go the other way. My .380 Mustang came in a box big enough for a full sized Long slide 1911. I dug it out and measured it. 15"X 8".
And have you seen the case that CMP 1911s are shipped in? Length and widith fit the gun, but that sucker is 6" thick!
