Grease v Oil

Oil, it’s what I was trained to use on the M-16A1 back in basic and during unit armorer training. Bolt Carrier and bolt, very light coat on other metal to metal surfaces (e.g. upper & lower contact) occasionally super light and springs and other metal to prevent corrosion.

As far as brand I generally use Hoppe’s lubricating gun oil.
 
Mostly the aerosol but on contact points and the BCG I use the paste religiously. Friend of mine who is a gunsmith and as I call him the ar guru sold me on Seal 1 and he applies it liberally to the BCG. I have shot my Saint in all weather conditions here in NE Pennsylvania and never had an issue whatsoever... Just my two cents...

I considered it, as I have the paste, but in my experience with using it on pistols it gummed **** up if I didn't wipe it all off.
 
Holy crap. This guy seriously over lubes his ARs.
I'd take his advice on how to lube an AR or anything else AR related considering his experience with the platform.

As a gunsmith Chad serviced over 11,000 AR's which in my book makes him an expert on the platform

Oil only on all my striker fired hand guns.
When I had 1911’s I put a very slight coat of red Mobil 1 grease on the rails and oil everywhere else.
When I had AR’s grease in some limited areas oil everywhere else.
My M1A a lite coat of grease on the charging handle assembly and bolt where it rotates in the receiver were going into battery. Oil everywhere else except the chamber per instructions needs to be oil free.

I enjoy cleaning and lubing my guns after shooting them as much as I enjoy shooting them. I find it very therapeutic.
 
That's definitely more than I use because I don't want to wear it as I'm shooting though I'm sure it runs for thousands of rounds before needing another coat of lube.
See that's the thing with me. I am not going to shoot thousands of rounds between clean and lube.
I'm not doubting the guy's credentials and I suppose if I was going for a 3 week trek through the desert and this here rifle was all I had to cover my ass I would do the same thing. It just seems like a god awful mess cleaning it with all that grease in there. And where I am it gets cold. Grease and cold aren't friends.

One of the reasons I started this thread is because I was kicking around the idea of putting either some Weapon Shield grease or some Seal 1 on the rails and cam and channel of the carrier and some up near the middle of the bolt. And by putting some grease I mean just a light coat, not slathering it on. I chose those two types of grease only because that's what I have. Frankly I would feel much more comfortable lubing generously with either CLP or better yet LSA. However I can't find any LSA from anyplace I trust and the modern equivalents (Bray 460, etc.) are insanely expensive.

Not that I have spent as much time behind one as you and the other AR guys here, but as of yet I have had no malfunctions whatsoever with any of mine. I'd like to keep it that way and I'd like any one of them to unleash a never ending stream of sweet, sweet chaos should the need, however unfortunate, arrive.

So let's assume it is 4 degrees fahrenheit. Is this light coat of grease or Seal 1 on my BCG going to cause me any problems ?
 
CLP for lube is all I use on my AR. The only firearms on which I use grease is the M1 and M1A. Lubriplate, just as it says in the manuals.

I am unable to fire a rifle fast enough to inflict anything close to "harsh" conditions due to the fudd rules at my range.
