Just to rule out all possibilities, and I'm just thinking out loud, might a magnet-mount be a source for small ferrous parts possibly bending out of shape? I have no idea what's inside the XD component we are talking about, but the OP did not mention specifically rust causing the grip safety to hang up...I just read that small amounts of rust have appeared. Have you confirmed it is rust on the grip safety components? I have seen over time that a strong magnet, over time, can make other ferrous parts slightly magnetized...

I don't recall a shower scene in that movie.
One of the best or at least one of my favorite Arnold movies is Last Action Hero. Two great scenes are the closet full of Desert Eagles and on the roof when the bad guy tells him to drop his guns.
