Gun Cleaning and Lubrication ~ Beware the Lie!

Didn't watch, like youngolddude I would rather read than watch a video. On the subject of gun oil, eh, each to his own. I've used 3in1 oil all my life. So did dad, granddad, and my grandmother. I have both her treadle sewing machine and her Win M94. Both work just fine.

I just actually cleared out a bunch of stuff that I tried and haven’t been swayed by one way or the other. I’m constantly searching for something that doesn’t smell like death. I like Ballistol, but my wife doesn’t, so ’nuff said. I don’t mind break free CLP, but again it has a distinct odor and you have to spray it. I’ve recently settled on Eezox which is one of those boutique cleaners that comes in a very small 4oz squeeze can for $16.00. I like the way it works. It’s a dry lubricant. There’s the part of my brain that keeps telling me it shouldn’t work and my gun should be dripping oil, but so far, so good.

Lucas Extreme Duty CLP smells very nice and works really well for a CLP.

pretty much for me as well

Hoppes 9 for cleaning

Lucas extreme duty for lube,

occasionally EWG when i need a bit of grease

occasionally Kroil for some cleanings

and i really do use that food grade mineral oil, to lightly wipe the entire gun

"gunblue" is an old armorer, former military, former cop too if i recall..

he pretty much uses the old ways, and it works for him..

i think his bottom line was, to not have to spend all sorts of money for a miracle cleaner and lube.

She didn’t like ballistol or break free but she lets you use Eezox? The few times I used that before I got rid of it I felt I should have probably used a breathing apparatus. Unless there’s some new odorless version I’m unaware of as I really did like the dry lubricant aspect and it did seem easier to clean after an initial cleaning with Eezox.

Hoppes is expensive? You can get it by the quart! How about those whizbang lubes that sell for $18-20 for a .5oz. bottle?

I should start a blog with the box of stuff I've purchased in the last 20-30 years. This one's crap, but this is my go to........
Yup-fully agree. I’ve ran Hoppe’s for more than 6 1/2 decades now, used 3 in 1 oil for most of that time. My father and grandfather did the same. Firearms always worked as designed. Several years ago number 1 son got sold on some snake oil called (amphibian) lube. All natural, biodegradable yada yada yada. What was NOT talked about was that this miracle lube used a carrier that would evaporate😳. Leaving behind a nice, very sticky goo. He cleaned and lubed an M1, a 92 Berreta and a Colt 1911 with this wonderful stuff and then deployed with the Corps for 6 months. When he returned home he took these pieces out of the safe and found that the actions on ALL three were effectively frozen shut😳. He Literalky KICKED the bolt on the M1 to break it use, The pistols? Removed the grips and soaked the entire piece in solvent for Two days before he could finally get them apart. He scrubbed them down, lumber them with real gun oil and had no more problems, except his Dad reminding him on several occasions not to “fix” things that aren’t broken. If something works well, why mess with it?

I find Eezox extremely mild when it comes to scent. My bigger concern is that it’s apparently pretty toxic.

Frog Lube needs to be applied correctly. I think you have to heat it. I still think it's snake oil.

Seal 1 is a VERY good bore cleaner, but I don't use it for anything other than that. I thoroughly cleaned the bore of a rifle after I put 500 plus rounds through it using Hoppes bore solvent. Brush and tons of patches until they came out clean. THEN I used Seal 1 and a bunch more crap came out. I haven't tried the aerosol or any of the other versions, just the orange paste.

For cleaning actions and other moving parts I usually use Lucas ED CLP. For lube pretty much any light oil will work. I use primarily Wilson Combat or Lucas ED gun oil.

BCGs I like the Wilson light grease. Except in the winter then I use the oil.

Of course my results really aren't any better than just using Hoppes and Rem oil I suppose. At least I can't tell a difference performance wise.

Hoppe's solvent, break-free CLP for all guns. Garand, M1A bolts (and other specific parts) get their factory-recommended Lubriplate 130A on surfaces outlined in the manual(s). I read about all the new fantastic crap, but these 3 have served me well.

In general I luv Gunblue490 (is that right?) He has some good content. Did not watch this vid.
