Gun Range Etiquette: Simple Steps to Safe Shooting

Good read with common sense information, I know a few guys at my club that just think they can come over and do what they want, handling your gun and equipment without even asking.

I will admit, when with a group of friends, we aren’t always the best about “loud & boisterous behavior”...

But that’s why we tend to go on off days, at off hours, and request to be put on lanes far away from the nice people.

Or, on my outdoor range, we just set up on the infrequently used 150 yard bay, leaving the most popular bays (pistol, 50, 100 and 200 yard) open for other shooters.

Basic etiquette goes a long, long ways.

Great read. I'm glad it's not just my friends being loud and boisterous too! But dang, I guess no more snacky cakes for me on the range.

I am a member of one of the oldest gun clubs in Texas. It's primarily a sporting clay club though we do have a Pistol range, Rimfire rifle range (50 and 100 yards), and Rifle range (up to 300 yards in 100 yard increments). All are uncontrolled. In the few years I have been going there it is rare for me to have to share any of the ranges with anyone. When I bring guests It's my responsibility to make sure they know the rules and follow them. Safety first but it does get loud at times.

ALWAYS keep gun pointed in a safe direction.

i cannot stand when people have an empty magazine and turn the gun sideways towards my bay (-or anyone next to them- ) to check to see if the gun is empty. Happens most with pistols for them to see if the slide is back and chamber open. Point that dang thing downrange if you have to look and tilt it back.
I chew on folks when they do that next to me.

i’m not pointing my gun at you. Dont point yours at me !!

At my club I’m the only guy usually on the ranges I shoot at. The pistol/rifle ranges are very seldom used by anyone but me. Most members are old guys hunting pen raised birds over Brittanys bred and raised there. I detest shooting pen raised birds. Last time I did it my Pointer grabbed a quail out of mid air 3’ off the ground. They’re slow and stupid. It’s not hunting.

Anyway I’m mostly on one of the seldom used trap ranges where I have room and space to safely set up obstacles and run drills. If I want to shoot a rifle or sight one in I’ll be on the pistol/rifle range but that’s the only time.

I dislike bringing groups of friends to the range so I don’t. I will bring one at a time if at all and then it’s one of 3 people who are gun guys like me. If I shoot with someone that doesn’t have experience it’s one on one because I’m teaching them some things. An exception, here soon I’m taking my sister and her daughter and it will be a training session and letting them try out shotguns, revolvers and semi auto pistols. Maybe even an AR.

I train semi regularly with a group of psychopathic military and LEO guys but not at my range. They have a place.

Long winded way of saying these are excellent range etiquette rules that rarely apply to me personally.

WTH???? Really?? I would be like, hey next time you come, can you bring your wife so I can grab her...........

I love to socialize at the outdoor range. Spend all day, take a few Coronas in the cooler, a rolled doobie if I really want to get mellow. Always get a kick out of other shooters marveling ( even trying out ) my inventory. And what a great way to stay current, walking up and down the line networking and learning about new toys.

:)

I gave a false lead to see who would bite. No one. Not a single comment condemning alcohol/drugs while handling firearms! Perhaps it's acceptable?

Only range I go to is off my back deck, don't do friends/shooting together, don't drink/smoke.

A single up thumb from Annihilator; perhaps we'll get stoned together while shooting someday! 😁

You gave another lead that wasn't false. Your age. The only people that call them " Doobies" are old men. :ROFLMAO:

I'm willing to bet money Anni, like everyone else, thought you were being facetious.

oh yeah, at least twice now, at my range, there have been a few new shooters that just don't seem to know, or care about safe gun handling. i usually like shooting at the last lane, cuz i sweep up my brass, so that no one will step on them and for reloading some day.

but when i see a crowd (more than 4 people congregating) at 2 lanes, i pack up and leave.

i always go weekdays, and when the place opens up at 9 AM....

but there are times, school vacations, or a day off for those others, they are there. sorta ruins it for the rest of us, to have to watch out for ourselves, if the RSO is all over the place, warning them.

If the only place I had to shoot was a range, with stalls and an RSO I would move. At a minimum my shooting trips would take longer as I would be headed for state conservation ground where I could shoot in the woods by myself or something.

I don't have a lot, but I do have a fantastic situation for shooting. And I don't shoot to socialize and I have no interest in mixing the two. Hell, I don't have any interest in socializing at all. Unless I am teaching someone ( a friend or relative) or training I prefer to be alone. And when we're training we aren't socializing. It's all business.

For me range day is for relaxing and destroying random wooden and plastic objects.

Never been to a range what's it like?
I've been blessed with farmland and steel targets...
I lived in the city and had a range less than a mile from work. I spent a fair amount of time there. It kind of sucks. It might be slightly better or worse than outdoors, depending on how you look at it. For a new shooter, it is not bad because you have hardly any distractions, wind or anything else. Yet for someone who has shot outside most of the time or has shot a little bit more, those lack of distractions make it less enjoyable.
I much prefer outdoors and with my wife or a buddy.

...and dated ideas that some know not to directly respond to?
Knowing when, how to or if in mixing things is like bartending?
Need to know what mixture/recipe works and doesn't comes to mind?

I have to say this is one of the more NON judgmental forums I belong to. I personally don't drink but love me some "devils lettuce".
