Hellcat issue

Anyone having trouble with hellcat magazines? I took out a fully loaded 11 round mag today and 6 rounds fell out of it. I seems the spring got hung up somehow. Also I noticed all the ammunition was bent and disfigured on the casings where they were pressing into the wall of the magazine. Pretty disappointing.

That doesn’t look good... Does it happen with both the 11 & 13 round mags?
Sure does. I checked the 13 round mag and it looked the same. It is pretty hard to get the last few in there but I’d think if it had enough pressure to damage ammunition they change the design. It sucks as I just bought this for an EDC and it’s shown me I can’t trust it with my life.

Well, I have a Hellcat and I haven’t had that problem at all. Maybe the people who assembled the mags put the springs in upside down or backwards by mistake? Maybe start with taking the mags apart, checking how they should go in and put them back together. If that doesn’t work, contact SA and see if they’ll replace the mags for you. Definitely a weird problem and one I haven’t heard of before with the Hellcat. And I’ve done a lot of reading on the Hellcat both before and after my purchase, around 6 months ago.

I've got about 500 rounds through my hellcat so far, and both my 11 and 13 round mags are HARD to load. I use an Uplula every time, and have never seen dents like that. I can't even think of what, in a mag, could DO that to a round. Those don't line up with any part of a mag, moving or otherwise. Does the mag in question, have a crease or a dent down one or both sides? If it does, that could potentially explain both the dented rounds and the sticking spring plate.

Agree on the disassemble-and-check, though. Also, if you press on the spring plate with a screwdriver, can you drive it down as if it were a loaded mag, and when you release, does it spring back up?

If its a brand new gun leave it loaded a couple days. With tiny guns the slide travels fast and a strong spring makes sure the bullets move fast enough to keep up with the slide. In a couple days the spring will weaken slightly making it easier.

It sounds to me (like others have said) that you have a defective mag. With the pressure manufacturers are under right now, mistakes are bound to happen. I would call or e-mail SA and advise them of the problem. Hopefully they will make it right. Let us know how it goes.

What brand ammo is that? Are you using a loader of any kind? Have you loaded and unloaded this ammo. Might sound stupid but you are coming in from the front of the mag and sliding them in and not forcing them straight down?

I have over 5,000 rounds through mine using 4 magazines and never had any problem let alone the problem you have. I would contact Springfield. I do use a loader because the magazines are still hard to load full. Up to 10 rounds it is no problem, but past 10 it is a major project. This is the first handgun I've owned that caused me to buy a loader. I do admit I now use the loader for other guns as well now that I own one.

I have had a similar issues once, I was distracted while loaded the magazine, and ended up with 12 rounds in the 11 round mag.

Are you sure you did not somehow over load the mag?

@Mattmike with only one mag having the issue I would advise to do the following:
1. Take the mag apart and make sure the spring is correctly inserted. See photo below or pg. 25 of the manual for proper orientation.
2. If it still isn’t functioning correctly contact Springfield. Their customer service reps are great and can help whether it be a simple adjustment or a warranty return.

Regardless, this isn’t a know issue with the Hellcat (to my knowledge). They should be able to get you a timely solution and restore your faith in the Hellcat as and EDC.
BTW- The Hellcat is sitting on my hip as I type this. It and my XDM 3.8 Compact share EDC duties.

Mike, I realize you haven't answered my post yet about whether those are factory or reloads, so let me add this before you do. In the pic it appears there is little to no crimp to those two cartridges. In fact they almost appear to have been expanded to accept the projectile and neglected to do a crimp after the bullet was seated. If that's the case, the bullet pull would be pretty insignificant and maybe allowing the bullets in some of them to move slightly forward with either the slam of the slide closing or the shot itself.

I know that's kind of a stretch to consider, but your problem is really interesting in that nothing obvious is working here as far as we can tell. Maybe worth a quick consideration. (y)(y)
