Hello and thank you in advance for your help here.
I recently purchased a Hellcat OSP complete with the SMSC. It came with no mounting instructions beyond remove the plate and install the optic. I was under the impression that the SMSc came mounted on the pistol. I was WRONG. Now I have questions. 1) a. Can I use the screws that came in the box with out modifying them? b. Do I need to purchase .5 mm thick washers? 2) Do I need blue Loctite? 3) Do I need to use the clear washers that came in the box? 4) What does the shim look like? I don't see it in the box. 5) What are the torque specs for the screws holding down the SMSc?
Any and all help will be much appreciated
I agree with
shanneba, and suggest using the guidelines from the manual to the extent possible. However those guidelines seem a little vague to me. I can offer the way I installed mine (SMSc on a Hellcat) and have had zero issues in over a year and probably a couple thousand rounds.
IIRC, I measured the two sets of screws and the shorter of the sets was right at the .095" protruding through the bottom of the mount. I did not use any "Locktite" directly on the screws, and most definitely not in the holes in the slide. I used a small cotton swab dipped in alcohol (the rubbing kind) and cleaned the inside of the mounting hole threads and outside threads of the screws very well, then allowed them several minutes to completely dry.
When everything was completely clean and dry, I put just a tiny dab of blue "Loctite" on my finger and just lightly touched the last couple threads of the screw with the "Locktite". I immediately inserted the screws and just snugged both of them down as equally as possible. Then working from one screw to the other, turned them both in about an 1/8 of a turn at a time till they reached 15 inch pounds measured with a quality torque sensing screw driver. Once at the 15 inch pound torque setting, I used a round, wooden toothpick and dipped it into some white model paint, then just touched a tiny white dot onto the mount and the screw head as 'tell tale' marks to indicate any movement and/or loosening of the screws while using the gun.
Information I had acquired from some source was that the nylon washers were to substitute for any 'thread locking' compound in any event there was an issue with the sight loosening over time. But, with using the tiny amount of "Locktite" that I did use, I've had absolutely no issue with the sight loosening or shifting. I would suggest using one or the other though and if you're troubled by the "Locktite", then use the washers. Double check the screw length if you choose the washers though ....... it may require the longer set with the washers.
Once appropriately mounted, you can adjust the red dot to sit directly on top of the front sight as in a 6
clock hold, or about 1/2 hidden by the front sight for a 'center on' hold. That will get you on paper and pretty close to where you'll eventually want your dot, but you should actually shoot it in to your exact desired POA/POI.
My preference is to sight in (zero) at 10 yds using 124gr 9mm's at about 1150 fps mv. That keeps my trajectory within 1.7" high and/or low out to about 50 yds. I don't ever figure to be in any gun fight at a range of more than 50 yds since I never learned to shoot over my shoulder at a full run. But YMMV !!! Hope this helps a little.
