Hellcat RDP sight picture

IMG_20210501_174824788.jpg

No matter how much I tighten the screws down, I have also taken it off and made sure it was clean both on the bottom of the optic and on the slide. Their pictures in the advertisement show a full front sight alignment. The rear of the optic which is the wasp blocks about half the front sight when aligned. For some reason it really bothers me not being able to see the entire front sight. Is this normal? They're advertisement pictures show a completely different sight picture

On my Hellcat OSP I have the sight picture displayed in the picture on the left ..... only exception being the red dot on mine sits directly on top of the front sight. I can see the entire front sight (ball in the bucket) with or without the red dot sight mounted. Envision if you will the red dot is a small round target and I'm holding at a 6:00 hold with the irons.

If I install a red chamber laser and hold on a wall about 30' out, the two red dots (the red dot sight & the red laser dot) cover each other. In order to see the red dot sight I must put my finger over the muzzle and cover the laser dot.

Either way, I have 100% co-witnessing with the Shield SMSc red dot sight. In my humble opinion, the pictures shown by Crazycote in posts #1 - #3 are not technically 100% co-witnessed. (y) (y) (y)

How to decide between the hex wasp and the smsc? I want the co-witnessing which is why I’m not going swampfox. Anything else I should consider? Any other options?

Well, I'm pretty satisfied with my SMSc, but then I bought it before the Wasp was even made so I have no real comparison. However all things considered, if I found either of them available for immediate shipment, I don't think I'd hesitate to order either one. They each have some differences over the other, but in the final analysis, I'm pretty sure you'd be well served by either of them.

Don't know that I'd say that about any others .................. !!!

I'm considering an upgrade to the XD-M Elite 3.8 Compact OSP. The HEX Dragonfly is much larger than the Wasp, so how important is it to cowitness both the red dot and iron sights?
When deciding to add the red dot to my Hellcat, that was my #1 requirement ...... to co-witness 100% with the irons. Now on a long gun a lower 1/3rd will work pretty well since with the longer sight radius you can simply tilt your head just a tad and get a reasonable sight alignment and picture. With a hand gun that doesn't work nearly as well.

My preference was that when I come up on target, I want to see that red dot first, then my irons if need be. But the whole point in adding a red dot is so that you aren't required to see the two sights at the same time. If you can see the red dot on target, assuming it's been sighted correctly, that's where the bullet is going (POI) because that will be your POA. By the same token, if you can see the irons, even without seeing the red dot, (which isn't likely if they're co-witnessed 100%) your POI will still be your POA with those irons.

As an aside, as many folks as there are out there who would love to put a red dot on their pistols but have been unable to find either one, if you later decided you didn't like whichever one you found, you'd be able to sell/trade it PDQ.

One last note: I'm not certain about the weight constraints for a red dot on the XD's, but it is a serious consideration on a Hellcat (limited to approx .5 oz). Be very conscious of what the dragonfly weighs. It may be too much for the XD slide to work properly. Good luck in your choices !!!

Thanks, Joe.

I have no experience with the Wasp as I purchased and installed the Shield RMSc for my Hellcat before the Wasp was released. My sight picture is like the SMSc pictured above, 100% perfect co-witness. It's been about 10 months since installation and still, no issues whatsoever. It costs $100 more than the Wasp, J-Point, or the SMSc but it's aircraft aluminum, not polymer, and I'm happy with it so far. In the end, get whatever works for you.

My HEX Wasp has an aluminum housing on it, which red dot has polymer?

The Hex Wasp has an aluminum housing and glass lens. The SMSc and jPoint have polymer housing and polymer lens and the RMSc has an aluminum housing and polymer lens. The SMSc and RMSc have the option of a glass lens for $80 or $100 more. The Romeo Zero has a polymer housing and a polymer lens. No option for glass lens.

Thanks uspatriot1960! I neglected to mention this about the Wasp but was referencing the RMSc but got my tongue over my eyetooth and couldn't see what I was saying. I went with the polymer lens for the RMSc for cost reasons after a LEO friend recommended it and the LensPen Law Enforcement Pro Kit which has kept my RMSc polymer lens clean and scratch free so far. I was REAL close to getting the SMSc, but then the Wasp came out and I jumped on it early. I’m sure I would have been happy with the SMSc or RMSc, but a little peeved that the Wasp came out so soon after getting it. I do like the Wasp and have no regrets going with it. Glad you like your RMSc. I read a lot of good things about it when I was researching a RDS for my Hellcat.

Thanks, new to red dots here, didn’t know some of this.
