As you may know, the Hellcat is not on the CA roster so buying one new is out of the question. However, I came across this one for sale: Springfield Armory Hellcat 3″ W/ HEX WASP, and I have questions:

Why did SA discontinue this?

For those of you who own one, what’s your take on it?

They have ten round models, same gun but ships with 10 round mags. don't understand why it wouldn't be on the list.

Not to be flippant but, it’s simply out AG being our AG.

Some of the ways around this is to either have a family member (parent/child) be LE and conduct a “Familial Transfer”, or be fortunate to pick up something on calguns.net which, if you do, will be drastically overpriced.

The gun isn’t discontinued, the WASP was due to much issues with it, fortunately, mine still works great and great battery life yet

I think that's saying the combo Hellcat with the Wasp is discontinued. I'm sure the Hellcat is still a valid gun and available. Like Anni, I too have the Hellcat/Wasp combo and have never had an issue. I kind of followed what was happening with the Wasp back when, and I think if the one you're looking at is a very early issue you'll be fine. It seems the second generation is where the problems started, and it wasn't drastic, they just ate batteries like crazy. My Wasp battery has been going strong now for almost 3 years I think, but in all honesty it's not on my Hellcat, it's still sitting on my desk. I had bought another RDS before the Wasp was even introduced, then as soon as it hit the market I bought one because they were SA. Since I already had the other RDS mounted, I decided to wait till it died before I changed it our for the Wasp.

If the price is right, jump on it and if the Wasp is an early issue you'll be fine. If it's a later issue, maybe not. But don't let the RDS cause you to lose out on one of the finest 9mm pistols you'll ever own. Not knowing CA requirements, if this one is allowed there's no doubt in my mind I'd jump on it.

Thanks jumpinjoe, I am meeting with the seller this weekend to initiate the transfer and DROS process.

Because the Wasp is a POS optic and should be avoided.

Never had one, but have multiple Dragonfly, which are OK not great, but $250. Is the Wasp that bad? How can one screw up so badly when Chinese-made $30 RDS on Amazon work, even on actual firearms for more than one range session? What have they done?!?!?!
There’s a 20+ page thread here on how many problems the Hex optics have had…they burn through batteries, and some people have had multiple replacements...all with the same problem.

I wouldn’t touch one. Better off getting a Vortex Viper/Venom.

Sad to hear, could have been a good acquisition for SA, but it seems that they're going to shut down the whole thing...
