How Lethal Is Rat Shot ???

I’m not sure why rat or bird shot is brought up. You can cherry pick one or 2 maybe successful uses but it is a 100% bad idea for 2 legged predictors and has been proven to not be effective.

With that said most agencies have done away with Number 4 Buck for that same reason

I use 00B, but I wouldn't be afraid to use #4. It is the minimum I would use though. I might load it up if I lived in an apartment.

When we were clearing our back property snakes were a frequent hazard. I carried a S&W 629 with snake shot during the project and discovered after two rounds the plastic capsules backed out from recoil and jammed the cylinder. I changed over to a Bond derringer loaded with .410 skeet loads and got a better outcome.

Dick Cheney endorses this statement
Dick was a great first name for that cat. I remember in the military they disciplined folks for bouncing a check (that was a thing back then) and a bunch of Congressional and Chaney got caught up in bad checks. I remember ole “Dick” referring to them as “problem” checks…no S&$T Dick!

So the shooting his friend didn’t surprise me. Must have been a “problem” round

4 buck is obviously a better choice tha bird and an apartment I get it however my point in mentioning is even it is not as effective as OO or slugs. And several Pads have had issues with the 4 buck (which the Patrol rifle has replaced the Gauge in a lot of places) shotguns are still a good choice

It depends on the distance.

LE use of buckshot will generally be at a lot longer range than in a HD scenario; #4 buck is a LOT more effective at 25 feet than at 25 yards.

What we have seen is anything outside of (normal) room distance is iffy with #4. I mean it probably is great for bouncing off the ground in a riot into the legs but most agencies quit teaching that a LONG time ago!

That said funny story I was a line instructor and we were qualifying a bunch of folks with 00 buck I actually witnessed a guy miss the whole B27 target with all 9 pellets. There was no extra hits on either target left or right (this was the first round fired)

So now we double downed “USE YOUR SIGHT you can and will miss it’s not a magic death Ray!!!!!

Some years ago out at our hunting camp, we were invaded by a swarm of 'Wood Wasps'. They got all up under our wooden framed porch roof and just about ruined our whole roof structure. We found swatting them was simply too much like work, so we started sitting around with our Thompson Center Contenders with rat shot and taking turns shooting them from rocking chairs. The average distance was probably 8-10', but we had to be sitting with our feet off the floor and the chair rocking when we squeezed one off. Sometimes we'd bet a little money on the outcome, other times not. But either way it was a lot of afternoon fun while sitting around lying to each other. (y):LOL:
