How often do you clean your gun?

It depends. Our Wild Bunch 1911's get cleaned after every match, same with our Lightning pump rifles. Cowboy guns get cleaned maybe 3-4 times a year. The wife's 1897 gets cleaned when it gets crunchy or a few times a year. Semi-autos are generally cleaned after every range session and new guns are cleaned and lubed before shooting.
 
Most of my autos every 700-1.000 rounds. My duty gun about 500 as they run (it’s an HK45 and strikers I run and Sig 226 gunpowder seems to be the lubricant) but seriously I just need it to run with my duty load which is 31 rounds in the 45 of 45 with my Sig 226 and I know it’s gonna run at 500 rounds at least that many.

My revolvers and 1911 a little more frequent. 1911 300 or so revokver if lead reloads a lot and brush out cylinders if jacketed it is around 300 with the 1911.

I’m not a military “operator” where of if I have to use my gun I’m going into a 24 hour firefight so I just don’t worry that much and because I attend 700-1,000 round classes a few times a year and trust my equipment as I replace springs when they need it and oil it when I need to. (Of course my lawn mower is the same so I got that going for me)
 
I only clean the small handful of guns that I carry on a regular basis as needed when they start to be filled with dust, lint, skin cells, and other debris, or after a range visit. Other range toys and guns I rarely carry or shoot much rarely are cleaned. That is, if I go to the range and take several rifles and handguns, I'm NOT cleaning all of them when all they had was one or two mags fired through them. They do not NEED to be cleaned, and there aren't any downsides in not cleaning them just as long as no ammo was used.

I will clean my carry guns whenever I fired one mag or a 50 round box of ammo, or 200 rounds during a class. I don't like getting unburnt powered, brass shavings, and other crap in my holster, on my hands, or on my clothes. I'm just more anal about keeping my common EDC guns clean and lubed while being carried.

me to
i have however on occasion didnt clean them after a short run of less than 50
but the nag in the back of the head usually wins and they get cleaned
i have also in those times i couldn't get to the range...cleaned them or wiped them down to just let them know i am thinking about them

Definitely depends on the usage and particular circumstances. Long guns? Rifles infrequently, shot guns a deep clean after the season - most of the time just a wipe down.

EDC? Checked and wiped down daily. Everything else? Depends on usage.

I do have a couple of annual rituals. Time change means ammo change for EDC and thorough inspection/clean. Easter weekend I take everything out of the safe and inspect and wipe down.
 
I’d agree mostly with everyone else except for my EDC. I don’t use it as an edc until it’s gone at least 1000 rounds and I generally don’t clean it during that break-in period either. Reason being I want to make sure that it’s going to operate no matter what I do to it. Sitting on the bed side table for 6 mo? Not worried. Multiple range trips without cleaning? Not worried. Do I prefer to clean after each range trip? Sure, but I’m also lazy. So I make sure it’s gonna run regardless.
 
Wow, this thread took off when I wasn't looking. I clean mine usually a day or two after a range visit. Most of my guns are in environmentally controlled safes, so those (the safe queens) I take out and check over in the spring. I do that on crappy weekends. The long guns are "once overed" in May.
I use Shooter Lube products because they work as well as Hoppe's but without the smell, because I clean them in my living room. We are trying to get the town to let us build the size of shop we want so we can store the truck, tractor and UTV as well have a little gun shop in the back, but the town is acting like a HOA with their dumb-*** rules on square footage yada yada. We're even looking for acreage further north where the counties are more lax on that. I hate moving though...

Low Profile lays out the * other side * of the never ending debate w/o resolution .

Every gun New - New , or New to You needs complete cleaning and proper lubrication . If only to remove a variable in establishing reliability and accuracy .

Carried guns need attention based on environmental exposure , not round count . At minimum a wipe down and inspection .

When blued was still common , l said once a week , plus every time rained on . With the predomence of high tech super duper resistant finishes , could probably stretch it some .

Round count at the range ? When it needs it . It depends on the gun , and the ammunition , any bbl deposits , and ammount of Crud . No fixed number .
