How To Deal With Cross-Dominance

Even if the Quell Stance IS a superior way to shoot, as claimed, 1985 Me still found enough silly and wrong with it to not put a whole lot of time into trying it. 2023 Me, now with a much greater understanding and appreciation for eye dominance and cross-dominant shooters, can admit that for cross-dominants, it has a LOT going for it, especially if, like mikep above, you're already basically shooting that way anyway. Hey, go with the flow and make it work FOR you, if possible! ;)(y)

Point shooting is called instinctive shooting in archery and is a matter of rote brain hand eye co-ordination. After you practice enough it simply becomes second nature. I once heard a great analogy by G. Fred Asbell. He said that it is like throwing a football or baseball, you do not think about it, you simply do it because you have done it so many times in the past.

Even distances are just done as a matter of brain hand eye coordination. As long as they have been practiced enough.

I have shot archery instinctively for about 60 years and from 5 to about 40 yards is just a matter of looking , picking a spot, concentrating on the spot, drawing and releasing. I have found instinctive shooting firearm to be a similar process.
EXCELLENT post! (y)

I'm not 100% happy with the term "point shooting" and have been looking for a better description for a couple decades. "Instinctive" is even worse, as man has not been using firearms long enough for their use to be imprinted on our DNA. "Unsighted fire" brings to mind a duel between Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder--no good. About the best I've come up with so far is "Indexed fire," as there are still in most cases visual cues that can be, should be, and will be used, "Target-Directed Fire," which can include other, non-visual cues.

Still, "point shooting" gets the main idea across to most people, and fine points of nomenclature can be discussed later. In fact, my imaginary book is called Point Shooting Made Easy, which should get the book's subject across quickly and easily. ;)

God must have wanted y'all to see this information today, because I was able to FIND it--a minor miracle! Thank You, God! ;)

My scanner is out, so I had to take a pic with my 20-YO digicam of the relevant passage. Improvise, Adapt, Overcome! It SHOULD be legible if you try. If not, I guess I'll have to retype the mess. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

I never knew I shot Quell stance lol. L eye dominate, R handed and this is just my natural stance.

Way too much thought is being put into it. Keep your eyes open and put the gun in front of your dominant eye. It works brilliantly and easily for me.

I shoot rifles and shotguns from either side. Beaded shotguns I shoot left handed. Anything with a scope or a red dot it is a moot point.

If anyone's still interested, here's the aforementioned Quell System target. You shoot it, and then score it on the backside--the dark areas are highest value, shaded areas reduced value, white areas no value.

BTW, Quell was apparently way ahead of the curve on Political Correctness. Looking at the original pic (in the magazine), it's impossible for me to determine with any degree of certainty the target "person's" race or sex (much less "gender").
