How to make the United States united again?

"It's absurd on it's face to say someone who thinks differently than you does so just because they want to destroy the nation. More likely, they simply have a different take on how to get to the place most of the people in this country would like to get to."

My. Where to start?

But to answer your first question again: Only two things, yea three, might bring unity to the USA; Total Calamity where survival of the individual (and the nation) was required. Political control to the extent Muammar Gaddafi, Kim Jong-Un,
Saddam Hussein, and others kept unity; with shear power-the populace/many sects were not unified yet peaceful until he was out of the picture, and, when she has fully run her course, with The Constitution cancelled ( its an ancient document, no longer relevant/useful ) and with the Media, Courts, and Tech companies (and certainly the notorious IRS) in obedient lock step to Uncle Sams cadence, all will take a knee for the sake of loved ones, ( to eat, stay out of prison/re education camps, from disappearance ).

And, those that "think differently", such as weakening/reforming/eliminating the Constitution, or allowing open borders for hordes to arrive ( that instantly receive benefits/entitlements that this VN Vet has yet to receive ) and given the right to vote while the waters of the Rio Grande still drip from them in a nation they have no history or feeling for and have illegally entered, raising the debt ceiling to the heavens & drowning the nation in unrecoverable debt/slavery to other nations that carry the note, are so sensitive pages of words from the dictionary must be torn out and decent people lose careers, education, honor, family and the ability to communicate it on the social platforms if they utter (even mistakenly) those now "forbidden" verbs, (and not only now but then: their social history will be searched back to their wild oats youth and surely there is a violation there? ), the destruction/removal of art/statues/buildings/literature/history of our nation, and yet deny they have trampled others rights..................you've had more than you can take Mr. Benstt........and to "anyone who has a different take" and would like to "get to that place" of unity will get there opposed the entire route by me, I'm not headed in that direction.

Yes, it is absurd to impute an ill motive onto someone for a difference of opinion.

I've had more than I can take of what? You and I aren't going to agree on the many circumstances you list in your post, a number of which have questionable factual basis and others neither of us understand unless we have Ph.Ds in macroeconomics, and that's fine. I'm not here to try to change your mind about anything.

Total cop out.
Stating the facts Sir, not trying to persuade you nor anyone else.
This thread has nearly run it course anyway.

It has little to do with a simple "difference of opinion". It's the intent of and probable result of those different opinions that matter. Why not read '1984'? Or maybe just take a look back at all the looting, burning, anarchy and destruction over the past summer in those cities and places where those other opinions are in effect.

I think it very simply falls back to the position that some of the country believe and trust in proven morals and traditions ..... like there really is a difference between boys and girls; there is no such thing as 2+2=5; there is truly a right and wrong; there must be law and order in order to have a civilized society!

And others don't believe that! It's your choice, but I'm with the some!

Opinions are not only different in many cases, but some opinions can and will cause much damage and harm to our country and our way of life. Look around the world at those countries that have implemented those other opinions and see how they're doing. It's those opinions that some of us oppose.

I think that many Americans have become desensitized to the conditions and issues confronting our country today. There are news stories that grab our attention, but our country has a short attention span. The current administration wants to spend Trillions of dollars, but are people paying attention? Look at the opioid crises, the border debacle, and even the Afghan disgrace. These should still be front page news, but are they? Out of sight, out of mind! Judging from past history it will probably take some huge jolt to our nation to get American's united for a common cause. It could come as a surprise attack like Pearl Harbor or 9/11, or a natural event of a magnitude never seen before. Maybe there's an asteroid out there with our name on it, a New Madrid level earthquake lurking below, or the Yellowstone volcano will erupt. It's a shame that people can't get over their differences, and realize what a good deal it is to live in America.

The eternal optimist in me wants to think that if we're ever tested in such a crucible again, that we'll pull together.

The cynic in me wants to think that if we were facing Kaiju, we'd probably debate so much on what color to paint the giant mecha that we'd never build it in time.

The way things are in this country right now, none. The days of "ask not what your country can do for you" are long gone, as are the days of Americans rationing for a war effort. The fact that the divide between right and left is increasing is why no politician currently on stage could hope to bridge the gap. The several "democrats just want to destroy the county" posts in this thread are evidence of that. It's absurd on it's face to say someone who thinks differently than you does so just because they want to destroy the nation. More likely, they simply have a different take on how to get to the place most of the people in this country would like to get to. I will say, there's no chance a person who talks about Mexicans as murderers and rapists and labels certain countries sh@#hole countries is going to do anything to remedy the current situation, and he didn't even try. Tucker is worse.

But this isn't about which candidate could unite the United States, it's a discussion of what it would take for the nation to do it itself. Some national unity is good and desirable because there are real, existential issues we have to face and the way things are now one party will reflexively oppose whatever the other party proposes so we never find solutions, just histrionics and bad-faith arguments, often contianing the same "person 'x' or party 'x' just wants to destroy the United States" position I noted above. My original post asked people to not take positions on issues so I won't here, but we'll never come to any real solutions if we can't get the country to pull in the same direction when it's needed.
With the current crop of democrats favoring some form of socialism and the spineless republicans not knowing what they want, it is unlikely we will reach compromise. This is a great indication that term limits are needed. We need to get rid of the whole lot and start over.

What a strange world you live in. BTW, best of luck in getting your VA Benefits. They saved my life two years ago (brain tumor). And welcome home.

Great attempt anyway, Benstt. :)

The United States is filled with several million good people. Just when I think there is no hope, I see young folks doing something that gives me pause and makes me think maybe there is hope yet. Do I think there are people behind the scenes who have real contempt for the U.S.? You bet I do, and on both sides of the political aisle.

I personally think social media (especially "Facebook") has in some (maybe a lot) of ways been really detrimental. I have never in my life seen such name calling as I have over the past 4 years or so. I personally know many of the folks doing the name calling, and know that they are good folks. I think the internet (even here) encourages people to "say" things they would never say face-to-face. What a downright shame.

How can we get united again? I think we could start by being more civil to each other. Even our politicians on the federal level are a part of the uncivil behavior, and that kind of behavior needs to stop. Think before you type or open your mouth. As Thumper said, "If you can't say something nice, then say nothing at all." If our news media folks would return to the principles of honor and honesty, that would help a LOT.

It has been a long time since the news media has had honor and honesty, it would be great to be able to listen and read without all the lies.

No.
No.
I don't do "Parties" nor prefer any of them.
Vote for the Candidate only, not the "Party"
The problem there is that the candidate belongs to a party, and if they win they align with a party caucus, and they vote for people like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi to “lead” the Congress.

The problem is the voters.........................

Sure…and I would say that people who vote for Democrats because they pretend to be “moderates” or say they won’t support Pelosi or Schumer or Biden are being duped.

Look at the Dems who took seats in swing districts in 2018 to take the majority. Almost every one said they wouldn’t support Pelosi for speaker or they’d be “independent” or similar rhetoric to get elected.

Then they caved and gave in to the swamp. If you ignore party, it’s naive in my opinion.

Same way with people who vote republican. The republicans act like they're going to do things for the common person then immediately bend over to the rich and corporate donors. No integrity there, and just as naive for anyone that isn't independently wealthy to vote GOP.

I may have alluded to this before........both parties are giving voters the bend over.

The day of the two party system is over. In reality both parties are one and the same;
you just get your bend over in a different position, with a different promise; that you
will enjoy it more and it will last longer than the other party.

Still, I'll take my mine in the more conservative "missionary" posture.
