That’s in better shape than the one pictured; I’d say that your friend’s gun is worth closer to $200, tops.

I’m wondering if the serial number on the butt of the pistol isn’t just worn, not scratched out. He hasn’t posted a picture of that. Not sure it makes any difference.

S/N’s 43406-282999 were produced between 1883 and 1909.

Assuming it’s 84-something, I’d say it puts production somewhere in the 1890’s.

Are those the only numbers on the gun? Bottom of the grip or behind the grips possibly? If you know what frame it is try adding the k, v, l or whatever before the numbers on s&w serial search.

Yes after being on hold for 45 minutes they said no records with serial number that old. Get in touch with historical. Which after being sent everwhere but russia got a headache and gave up

FYI:

S&W Historical will charge $50 for a letter with information...and that’s the only way you get anything from them.
