I think I might have a problem...

So I like red dots. So I think I always need a project. So I was looking at my "stuff" and saw that my M&P40 1.0 does not have a red dot. Like a dog spotting a squirrel I started looking up options on putting a red dot on a 1.0 M&P.

Now I have found out that the 9 and 40 slides are identical with the exception of the opening for the barrel. I have also found out that there are a lot of NIB 1.0 9mm slides out there.

I'm not even sure that I like Smith and Wesson; we've had a very antoganistic relationship in the past. I buy them. They malfunction. I send them in for repair. They malfunction again. I send them back again. I put them in my safe to sit until the zombie apocalypse where they will probably function without fail, ...for anyone and everyone else but me. Win-win.

This is what happens when you ship off a CZ slide and the business says, "milling a P-07 slide can take 3 - 4 weeks" and you are halfway past week 3. And after you find that rare 6906 that reminds your of your first duty gun only to find out that there is literally no way to mound a light on it so that project is done.

So now I have a new project. But I have a project to finish; my P-07 slide should be home soon. I will probably have another before I know it.....

Where was I? Oh yeah. I'm starting a new project. I'm going to build a 9mm slide for my M&P40 1.0. Threaded barrel, red dot sight, tacti-cool iron sights. Should be interesting.

More good news. So I decided to put together a 9mm slide for my M&P40 1.0. Buuuuuuuuuuuuutttttt....... I had another project that was delayed due to weather. I had shipped my CZ P-07 slide to Florida to be chopped up for a dot. It was done and made it as far as NC before getting limboed due to what was happening. USPS just texted me its in town and should be in my mailbox tomorrow. 😬

I have two projects. I'm so happy. Fortunately the wife has no idea... Actually she probably doesn't want to know (or care?) why I'm giggling like a school girl as I run to the mailbox.

Maybe I should buy that 4013TSW. I mean who doesn't want a Gen 3 Smith with a light and a dot?

Or two? Two is a good number.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll......................................... About that 4013 TSW. I didn't get it. Thank goodness I waited. I found another one a week later for more than $100 less ($400). And it needs some TLC. I love it.

So now the red dot for the M&P40 1.0 is on (permanent?) hiatus... ,although the 9mm slide is complete.

With the 4013 in hand I spent a good chunk of time getting rid of rust (not too much really), dirt, carbon and other build-up.

I already have a JPoint 2000 mount to replace the rusted rear sight with a red dot. There is an individual on another forum who turns Gen 3 Smith's into works of art and is going to sell me a couple of taller front sights to co-witness with a pending 507K x2. For lighting I am going to mount an Olight PL-2 Mini Valkyrie.

Most of the internals seemed to be solid. The grip was brand new so I am thinking that this thing, to get sold, probably had to have it replaced. The hammer had rust on it, on the exterior but where the pin runs through it. The grip pin was the worst but it cleaned up easily, just like the hammer.

Honestly I think some maintenance was done on it but then it was allowed to sit. I wish I could look up where it went and where it has been. It was definitely a carry gun based off of the exterior polish points, but judging by how some of the scarring is, it might have been a pool gun. Unless it was just issued to someone who carried it for a long, long time and treated it like a rented mule.

I am going to order some parts and see if anyone knows how to polish up an aluminum alloy Gen 3 Smith frame; the beaver tail is all dinged up.

Is it too late to point out that 40 S&W to 9mm conversion barrels are available for first gen M&Ps?

I was looking at my M&P 40 and having similar thoughts. I bought it a few years back as my first striker fired pistol. Then I bought an M&P 2.0 that came with a cheap optic mounted to test and see if I liked red dots. It's wearing a Holosun now, and I like red dots enough that I built a 40 S&W 1911 that's also set up for optics with a Holosun green dot.

And now that I just bought a compact M&P that's going to be wearing a Viridian green dot, I'm looking at the first gen M&P 40 and thinking it's in need of an update.

I set up a second slide for mine too, the original thought was to have the second slide rigged up with an optic cut and extended/ported barrel. But now that I have the carry comp, I'm thinking if I could get someone to do a similar port job on a factory 40 S&W barrel that might be preferable. The ported Stormlake barrel I found doesn't seem like it does anything of value.

Been a convert since Gabe Suarez first started preaching. He was making slides for the 17, and I gave him money on a prebuy for a Glock 19 slide. This was like 2009 or so. Later I cut a 19 frame to 26 dimensions to make a 19/26 that is easy to hide under a T-shirt. The butt is what is hard to hide. I don't understand why Glock made a full size grip with a 19 slide. Anyway, Trijicon RMR is always on, and I just put a new battery in on my birthday. It is a game changer.

Yes. Yes it is. I found out that Smith did something better than Glock. Only this one thing though. Otherwise, since they stopped their Gen 3 production almost everything is lacking....

Oh. Sorry. On a tangent there for a moment. So, like mentioned, I found out (this may not be true and is only internet truth) that the only difference between the 9 and .40 slides on the 1.0's is the barrel and barrel opening in the slide. The extractor and ejector are the same(?). There was also talk about how all you needed to do was swap barrels and you could go from a .40 to a 9mm.

Well I am here to say that this is true. At least in my case. I shot plenty of 9mm with just a barrel swap. I even used the .40 mags (this did not work great). I just wanted to put a red dot on something and also keep going with a random project to throw money and time at. But then I fell back in love with my Gen 3's.

First it was finding a beat up 5906TSW. This led to a 4013TSW (my current favorite). Now I have a 6906 that sometimes wears a 6904 slide for that two-tone look.

I did just get and mount (photos coming) the shark fin sized front sight for my 4013TSW. It is awesome. I'm planning on hitting the range as soon as I can. I need to dial in the dot (sadly a Sig Romeo Zero-Elite) and see if I need to adjust my irons. It's currently also wearing an Olight PL2-mini Valkyrie and the size of the front sight still lets it ride in my Craft thumb-break leather holster. Yay!!!!
