In your opinion

The Taliban has seized US weapons left in Afghanistan worth billions — possibly including 600,000 assault rifles, some 2,000 armored vehicles, and 40 aircraft, including Black Hawks, according to reports.

The US gave the Afghan military an estimated $28 billion in weaponry between 2002 and 2017 — including seven brand new helicopters delivered to Kabul just a month ago.

The war chest also included the supply of at least 600,000 infantry weapons — including M16 assault rifles — as well as 162,000 pieces of communication equipment and 16,000 night-vision goggles.

In just two years from 2017 to 2019, the US gave 7,035 machine guns, 4,702 Humvees, 20,040 hand grenades, 2,520 bombs and 1,394 grenade launchers, The Hill noted, citing a report last year from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR).

“Everything that hasn’t been destroyed is the Taliban’s now,” one US official told Reuters, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Getting off track here, fellas.

You have to look at how carrying has changed. Originally, in the 19th century, revolvers were king along with single shot rifles. Later, lever rifles became predominant in some circles but the revolver stayed.

Browning came along and invented several semi-auto pistols, including a 25 caliber which was great to have when you couldn't carry a gun (a joke at the pistol's diminutive size). Shotguns became more popular in the early 1900s but rifles were still predominant.
It seems like after world war 1 handguns became very popular; city gentlemen carried them, veterans often had them.
It seems to me that shotguns were used mostly in the security sector and in the home the handgun and rifle was king

I believe the firearm type most owned by Americans is the semi auto modern sporting rifle. There are estimated to be 30 million AR-15s alone in the US, and that could be a low estimate.

I don’t think the number of shotguns even reaches 20 million.

I can believe there are more AR-15s than there are shotguns, but I doubt there are more AR-15 owners than shotgun owners. In fact I’d bet money on it. Most AR owners own several which accounts for those numbers. Scores and scores of hunters and shooting enthusiasts don’t own any ARs.

Could be. Pew Research and NSSF have both put out numbers that show more rifles than shotguns, but not sure how ownership breaks down.

I can speak for myself…I own a few modern sporting rifles (not just AR-15s) but have zero need or use for a shotgun. I don’t hunt and wouldn’t use a shotgun for home defense. I would bet I’m not unique.

Maybe so, but I’m betting the vast majority of life long gun owners over the age of 50 own at least one shotgun.

I own a few ARs but I only got my first one last year. On the other hand I have no clue how many shotguns I own. I’m sure I have some I’ve completely forgotten about. I can tell you it’s more than 15 and less than 40. 🤣

Or at a guess what do you think the most common platform of firearms are in the States? For example, striker fire pistols.
Not specifics (ie Glock 19) but general platform.
I think the most common types/models will be...
HANDGUNS: Striker fired 9mm's and J/Small frame revolvers
RIFLES: Ruger® 10/22 22LR and AR 223/5.56
SHOTGUN: 12ga pump

Just my $0.02.
