insane used car prices

5 months ago my employer purchased (for my company truck) a 2024 Chevy Silverado, stripped with NO frills (not even volume control on steering wheel or any phone control buttons which are all done through the radio). $48,500 sticker. On a positive note, I just had my 5th oil change, and my dealer said I'm in the running for most miles on a model-year 2024!

I have a very clean, low mileage (28XXX) 2014 Silverado 5.3L Flex Fuel that I bought in early 2015 as a demonstrator. I knew the short history of the truck and it had virtually everything on a truck I would have ordered if I could have ordered a new truck. IIRC it had 6XX miles on it when I bought it. Today, almost 10 yrs later I can sell it for about $2,000 less than I paid for it 10 years ago. Yep, used vehicle prices are totally insane. Likely now it'll be my last truck. And BTW, it cost several thousand more than my first house back in 1970-71.

I totally get your point. If I’m going to spend nearly the same amount, I’d rather have that new car smell and the latest features.A while back, I had to help a friend ship car across country because she found a great deal on a new model that was only available on the other side of the country. We crunched the numbers, and it actually made more sense than trying to buy a used one locally that was just as expensive! It’s funny how some people might not think about shipping as a viable option, but it can be worth it for a new car.

I drive my wife's cast off car...when her 2013 Honda Civic Si was nearing 100,000 she got the new car, I got the Honda. The Honda has a 201 Horsepower engine (without the complexities of a turbo) with a precise six speed MANUAL transmission and a limited slip diff. And of course four wheeled disc brakes. The spec sheet reads more like a sports car from the 60's not an economy car. Zero to Sixty in 6.1, 14.6 quarter at 95.6 mph...and if you keep your foot out of it 30 plus miles per gallon. And a sunroof. I will probably be driving this car for the next ten years. We bought it new and maintain it fanatically. I can't replace it with cars on the market today. The new Civic Si makes the same HP with a smaller four and a turbo...no thanks. The 2.4 engine in the 2013 has plenty of low end torque and a 7000 rpm redline. Baby it and it is an economy car. Drop down two gears on the highway to pass and hold on!
