Just A question about making deals

the LGS and owner and I have became sorta friends over the years, this is a gun shop/gold ,silver pawn shop sorta thing. We live in rural GA so not many gun shops. I have bought many guns from him. My question is have any of you been able to talk the owner down on price new and used? shop , gun store or gun brokers kind of places ? The reason I ask is my LGS friend won't come down one penny for no reason nobody and the only deal for less is / was private. Just would like to know for no reason
OH His prices are pretty high

yes, i "talked down" the price on a used gun, recently from a private seller.

when i went to buy a Dan Wesson, i actually bought 2 of them and i talked the owner into a discount.

i too am a regular buyer with at least 3 places, 1 very large distributor LGS, 1 mom & pop place, and the range i go to.

thing is, we all want to support the local businesses as much as possible.

if where you go he does not budge?

ask for a box of ammo for free.

other wise, you may have to find another shop

many shops here, for a popular gun, sell at full MSRP. the "less" popular, go for reduced pricing.

case in point, at the large distributor LGS..??

he has a Ruger GP 100 6" barrel, for $840...full list pricing is $1099........

but the ever popular Dan Wessons? full list pricing.

one more thing...."cash is king, all others walk away"..

offer a CASH NOW deal..........

Our guy is the only one for many miles so he has use . Like you said they want support but sometimes it's hard

you can always buy online as well...however, that store you go to, might not want to deal with where you buy from, his right to refuse.

sorry you may not have too many choices, but some day, do some searching of other places, (if possible), load up the pick up or car, and go for a ride and do some shopping..??

It all depends on how much want for the item you show the salesman before you try and haggle. If he thinks you'll pay more he most likely won't budge. Used firearms are usually bought for low money and so the profit margin is typically higher which makes it sometimes easier to get a deal. Of the store is doing well with sales or the item your trying to buy is a popular seller you may find it harder to get a price break.

Most shops that sell consignment on used ones have a set percentage on top of what the owner has to have. Its too much of a pain to contact the owner to see if they will accept a lower price. Its unfortunate that sometimes, the price + shop fee is over the MSRP on a new one or the new one can be had cheaper. I went into a shop a while back that had three used 500 magnums. At the time, one could be had new for $1150. All three were over $1300 in the shop. I told the owner, this is what I will pay, showed him the new in stock price at a local farm store and he still refused to budge. I just told him that I hoped he enjoyed looking at them in the case because no one in their right mind would give him what he was asking.

When looking at prices for older firearms GunBroker, Guns International, Guns America and Gun Boards can be very helpful. Remember, the prices you see are what the seller is asking. Check past sells to see what stuff sold for. Prices can also be regional. Some guns go for more in some areas of the country than others.

About all you can do

I've had luck at the 2 LGS and Gun Show that I visit/attend. the 2 LGSs won't budge on new guns, but I've mostly been able to get $50-$100 off used guns, either because I've bough a lot from them prior, or I'm buying 1-2 new guns along with the used one. At the Gun Show, I'll buy a few new guns and ask "what's the best you can do for me". I usually get a discount off the BGC and tax. One example was when the first version Saint AR15 came out, they were going in the $850-$870 range. I was able to grab it for $800 Out The Door, and I'm sure he still made a nice profit off the several other guns he's sold to me on other occasions.
I find it never hurts to ask, they can always say No, they won't deal, but you may get a surprised that sometimes they will.

Yes sir you know it. Gunbroker is cheaper than this guy ??
by the way, i failed to mention, when i said "he may not want to deal with any online purchases you make," i meant that he may not want to cooperate on the FFL side of it.

you should ask (unless you already know) what his FFL fee's are, should you buy anything online.

i should also point out, that on some gun message boards, there are gun sales. some are private depending on the state where it is being sold, and you meet the person, face to face. others will ship FFL to FFL

since i am not sure i can put a link here for another gun message board, i will and a mod or admin can simply delete it

but i will also send you a PM with that link.

it is for a 1911 message board, and frankly, i have NEVER heard a bad word from any of the buyers, from members of that board. all the sales have been complimentary to the buyer, for speed of delivery, and quality as said on the site, meaning no shady deals...like bait and switch, damaged products, the sellers "tell it like it is"

just follow the rules at that site, as you would here, regarding how many posts you can make, before you can buy.

mods/admins, if this is not in line with helping someone, then i'll understand you deleting the link.

I have always negotiated private sales, pawn shops, gun shows and the likes. Depends on a number of factors. If it is a very good discounted price I am more willing to pay the asking price and not push too hard on a "no discount" response but if the price isn't a deal, it depends on whether or not you can walk away. This applies to more than just weapons (used cars, appliances, tools, etc). I will give a "I will pay X dollars cash, if you change your mind give me a call" and walk away. I get a call back more than 50% of the time. I've had people scoff at how much I am willing to offer versus their asking price and yet at the end of the day get the call back. Don't know if you have a sales tax in your state, but one tactic that I have used successfully at one of our pawn shops is if he won't discount the price I will state back the asking price and then say that includes the sales tax right? He usually capitulates with a "your killing me here" statement but 7% is 7%...

I always try to look at the deal from the seller's perspective regarding firearms, ammo, etc. If the seller knows he will sell "X" to the next guy for $100, why should he sell that same "X" to me for $90? Scarcity has been a scourge for all of us lately. However, when that M1A Standard has been hanging on the wall for the last 18 months and the LGS is asking $1999....and he won't budge from the price on an aging firearm (18 months is an extraordinary time for inventory to sit without selling) for which he likely is paying interest on the money used to buy the inventory...I have no trouble walking out the door. If one LGS is within 10% of another LGS, then the service comes into play for me.

Keep in mind, I have what I consider "LGS" probably 20 gun stores, given that I travel 150-miles +/- in my sales territory. I'm not including the big-box stores like Cabelas. While they do have great prices during a specific product "push", their pricing is not generally best where I travel (I have 3 Cabelas stores in my territory). I still go in their stores for the gun "libraries", or whatever they call them. One I go to usually has 6-8 Garands in stock....unfortunately they ask $3k for them with iffy bore and chamber grades...

You used to be able to "deal" with Cabelas before BP took over, and now Sportsmans Warehouse is in the same boat.

In my area I develop relationships with 99% of the LGS folks since I think that's important. The Big box places can offer good deals on sales, but mostly I ask the smaler shops what their best price is compared to the tag. I usually get a slightly better price.

I also have lost $$ when trading excess inventory in for store credit, but can get a slightly better price for a new item when I'm paring down the herd but upgrading for a more capable item that they may have on hand.

I still see folks selling at gunshows with inflated "AWB Pre-ban" labels on stuff that look like they've been drug behind a pickup for the last 20 yrs. I write-off dealing with those folks right off.
