Keeping a firearm in a vehicle

Was talking to some friends the other day and the subject of keeping a gun in your vehicle all the time came up. And by all the time, I mean even when the vehicle is parked at home or elsewhere....I myself am not a big fan of this for a couple of reason. The first issue I have is theft of the firearm. I know there are vehicle gun safes that can be locked and secured in the vehicle, but from experience, I know if a thief wants it bad enough and the opportunity arises, they will get it...I am in no hurry to explain to law enforcement, insurance or anyone else how my firearm was stolen, let alone possible consequences if the firearm is used in a crime or worse....

Secondly, anytime I leave the house, I have a firearm on my hip or in my waistband etc...I just don't see the need to have one in my vehicle as well. If I get into a self-defense situation, chances are I will be able to access the one I am carrying much faster than one that is a lockbox, glove compartment, center console or someplace else in the vehicle...

Just curious what others think of "truck guns" as a viable option....

I don't know what folks are experiencing in other parts of the county, but in central Virginia the thieves are working over time breaking in to cars all over the city. Guns are tops on the list for theft. I dare say all of these guns end up in the hands of criminals. To me the responible gun owner never leave a gun in his or her car unattended over night. If a gun owner finds it too hard to take a gun in the house at night perhaps he or she shouldn't own one. Just my 2 cents.

I was a mechanic for my city for 25 years. As such, I dealt with our cops pretty much on a daily basis. Every single one I ever asked said unanimously that the most common stolen gun report they did had the gun stolen out of a vehicle.
If there's a gun in my car, Its attached to me. It leaves when I leave.

I won’t disagree with anything on here that’s been posted.

But I do keep gun safe in my truck locked underneath the front seat. I don’t keep a gun in there except under certain circumstances. Generally it involves me taking my kids to swim lessons, and they are still to young to be in the pool without the adult yet. I have twins, wife and I have to be in the pool. Can’t bring the gun in or carry it into the pool. So I keep it in the safe of the truck. There are also other times, out on Saturday maybe without the kids and wife and I might stop at a bar for food and a drink or 2 for lunch or dinner. Gun has to stay in the truck.

Basically I hate leaving my gun in the truck, but sometimes it’s a must. Therefore, I keep the safe in there for those situations. Not ideal but I do my best with the situations I find myself in.

I do not leave my firearms in my vehicle except when I have to go to a building where they check for firearms and such.
I will not leave a firearm in my vehicle over night, never.
Why open up the possibility of it being stolen ❓
WE all know stolen firearms are used in all types of crimes and would you want your firearm involved in a murder because you left your firearm in your vehicle❓

I have a gun safe for my firearm that I switch between vehicles. My firearm goes in it when I am at work, or if we are out and about and go into an area that it is illegal to carry, such as a school, school arena, government building, etc. All firearms come out of the vehicle when at home or other abode at night.

Along with car break-ins, there were over 1 MILLION cars stolen in the U.S. last year. In my opinion, leaving a gun in an unattended vehicle, safe or not, is the act of an irresponsible gun owner. Sorry if I'm stepping on toes, but that's how I feel.

There are times when a gun has to be either left at home or temporarily left in a vehicle (I.e. stopping by the post office or county courthouse on the way to Walmart or the range). It is best to just make two trips if you can. Just like with most things in life, good judgment is very important. Don’t do stupid stuff!

If your daily work requires you to be in a building or 2 that you cannot carry in, i would rather have to firearm temp in a car safe than go all day without a firearm.

I'm really surprised, this is the first time I've ever seen this discussion come up and everybody in the discussion is in agreement that it is a bad idea to leave an unsecured firearm in your car.

I might have told this story before but 35+ years ago when I lived in Florida somebody broke into my truck while I was in a movie theater. I don't remember why but at the time I carried the spare set of keys in my glove box. The thieves found the keys and left them sitting on the seat. I don't know if they were intentionally sending me a message but I got it. The cops that responded told me I was an idiot. Anyway I learned my lesson.

Car break-ins are a common occurrence. Every single one of the name trainers has done an article about why you shouldn't leave an unsecured gun in your car.

I have read hundreds of posts by people identifying themselves as police officers who talked about the number of vehicle burglaries they've responded to in which the victim loses a gun. A lot of times they mention the car wasn't even locked.

You could if it was a Glock

Me too. You usually get responses like "Its the thief, not me", "Its my right" or something along the lines of "I only leave a cheap gun in there that's easy to replace".
Being new to this forum, its downright refreshing to see common sense for a change. I think I'm gonna like it here. ;)

I have a truck gun that matches my EDC. When I leave the vehicle for the post office or volunteer work, it goes in a safe under the seat. Never left overnight even in my locked garage.
