And right there is the reason for a Carabineer … keep that heavy baton clipped on a Carabineer and not hanging off your ignition from your keys
 
I've carried a Kubotan or something similar since high school; as a then police Explorer they were just coming into being and we were trained in their use. Later on, in the mid-80's, the Mini Maglite came along. I was a sworn Officer this and became my choice as a secondary compliance tool, especially off duty. As the years progressed I had many Kubotans and Mini Maglites pass through my hands. In the mid-2000s, long since retired from LE, I started carrying an ASP Defender - basically a Kubotan with pepper spray. I've used it twice; once on a dog that was determined to take a bite out of me. The second time was at a quinceanera when an unwanted drunk guest didn't want to leave and decided he'd rather fight. A quick spritz, a wristlock using the Defender and a couple dozen quick, uncomfortable steps (for him) and he was on his way. I've always like the concept and have found all of these iterations very useful when a lower level of force is necessary.

Just read the latest article on TheArmoryLife.com titled "Kubotan: The Ultimate 'Unarmed' Self-Defense Tool?" and thought I'd share it with you all. It's a pretty interesting read if you're into self-defense tools. The Kubotan seems like a handy little gadget that could be useful in a pinch.

The article covers its history, uses, and some basic techniques. It reminded me of when I first got my kubotan from selfdefensekeychainsets.com. I was skeptical at first, but after a couple of quick tutorials, I felt a lot more confident walking home late at night. The quality of their sets is top-notch, and they even have cool designs! If you're into practical self-defense tools, definitely give it a look. Stay safe out there!
 
I was retired from LE, 30 years ago. Not by choice. Before the ASP became popular, although I don’t think LAPD adopted it. Never carried a Kuboton, although I knew others who did. To me, if for some reason I could not get to a firearm or knife, I expected my hand to gland training to kick in.
 
My first agency actually taught a course for use of Kubotan and issued them. Doing the wrist clamp take down was wonderfully useful for folks that didn't want to leave their seats in bars or vehicles. I found that doing the takedown and then pulling them forward a couple feet before cuffing took every bit of wind out of their sails. An un-expanded ASP or other expandable baton can be used as a kubotan with good effect also.
 
In a plainclothes role working protection details years ago I was issued and carried a yawara stick. That version was made of aluminum with sharp fins at the end. There were some excellent control techniques with it, and it could deliver some serious hurt on pressure points.
