LGS manager says…hold off on SA-35

Went into my LGS today, a retail outlet that stocks and sells many Springfield Armory products, and the manager told me point blank not to buy the SA-35 due to extractor issues.

He said they’ve had 50 units on back order and only actually received 2 units since release. But it surprised me that a manager of a store where a large part of their business is SA branded products would tell me straight out that there are issues and not to buy the SA-35 until they’re ironed out.
I went back and reread the op, and noticed a few things. This manager did not say they two the store sold had problems. And yet still has 50 more on back order….guess they can’t be that bad since thats a 25-30k order.

And anyone in the industry that does ordering of anything that is hot. You could have a million dollars right now and if your life depended on it. You could not get more than a few of any of the hottest guns right now. You are competing with thousands of other stores.

I wonder where the manager heard of the extraction issues? Maybe the reviewer we have been reading about on this thread? Kind of like a snake eating it’s own tail, one source is making the rounds and every one is sourcing the same source

  • I have a mid 2000 serial number- I do like it but very concerned about extractor problems. I did return it under Warrenty but still having issues.
Have fired it approximately 650 times and roughly 25-30 failures to eject.
I have shot about 8 different types of ammo- worst problems with Winchester fmj and Sig Sauer 115 grain jhp Defensive ammo

I’ve seen comments on the extractors on multiple non-SA forums. Sig Talk, The High Road and the 1911 Forum. The good news is the P320 bs has been pushed off the front pages!

Well Springfield has to be good for something

Really the argument is you can find people that have had problems with every product ever made, the question is can it be fixed?

My experience is that if you put a group of people together, typically you will get 30% who are malcontents who would complain if they won a million dollars because they only take home 550 grand after taxes. Unfortunately those are the people who take to a forum to slag people and products off without hesitation, and misery loves company. Personally, I’m a contrarian. If you tell me a product is crap I’m going to buy it and make it work flawlessly just to annoy people!

No, he didn’t say the units he sold had issues.

I asked if he had the SA-35 in stock, and he told me no, that he’d only seen 2 despite having back orders for 50 of them, and then he mentioned to me that holding off may be a good idea in any event.

i think he still gave you good advice.

wait until this batch gets sold, (when they arrive), THEN buy one at a later time?

Saying something like that to a customer is a double edged sword and I can’t help but wonder if the “owner” of the store/company; whether it being a one of or chain store is aware that’s being said.
Since I’m not interested in purchasing a SA-35 I’ll sit back and just see how things work out, I’m sure Springfield A. Has things worked out.
It’s a local gun store that also has a range and gunsmith business. They sell a lot of hardware but that’s not their only business.

So these are the only things BHSs found to be acceptable on the SA35, direct screen shot. At least the grip screw made it, I would have for sure thought they would recommend the superior torx version screw.

And that’s great. 👍

I’m in no way saying “the SA-35 sucks” or “don’t buy one” or anything else.

Just relaying a real world conversation I had with one person who happens to run a firearms store.

He could be just repeating rumors or might have ulterior motives. No idea. They’ve never steered me wrong before though, so I took him at face value.

YMMV

I had an Inglis HP, which I sold and have long regretted doing so. I have always wanted another. However, original HPs are now prohibitively expensive. I was excited when Springfield armory came out with a new SA 35 last fall. I contacted my local FFL, and asked him to get me one ASAP. He said he would contact me as soon as one came in. I got a call from him a couple weeks later. He told me to hold off buying it, just like neil0311’s dealer. He told me about the extractor problems. So, there are honest dealers out there. Hoping Springfield would rectify the issue, I’ve held off buying an SA35.
I want to thank Talyn for posting the BHSS video. Excellent piece!
The SA 35 is now off my wish list. I’ll save my money until I can find a decent original or, since FN is making them again, but a new one.

Hi-Powers have always been expensive. I paid handsomely in ‘91 for my new one. They have never gone down

The "new" FN Hi Powers are really not the original design. FN deviated a lot from the original to develop the "new" one.

The only thing that the original & new have in common is the ammo. There's no cross-compatibility.

On GB, Mach1Arsenal has a long history of bringing in Israeli LEO turn-in original BHPs. The have several Mk. II & IIIs on GB right now ranging from $750-900. The Mk. III I recently got for $900 was essentially a new gun with only a couple mags run through it according to Mach1.

Note: the "cast" frame Mk. III are post-93 models and the strongest BHPs ever made. The pre-94 Mk.IIIs and every prior model are forged frames.

Hi-Powers have always been expensive. I paid handsomely in ‘91 for my new one. They have never gone down
When FN/Browning discontinued the original the MSRP was $999. The several originals on GB that Mach1Arsenal is offering are below that original MSRP.

Just realized I can't buy a new HP in New Jersey anyway. There is a ten round mag limit for the general public here in the Socialist Republic of New Jersey. As a retired LEO I can carry a 15 round mag weapon, but the new HP mags hold 17. Theoretically, I could own the gun, but I would be restricted to the 15 round mag. The problem is that the FFLs here won't stock them because they can't sell them and don't want to go through the trouble of contacting the distributers to request that only 15 round mags be shipped with the pistol. A classic "Catch 22." I will keep scouring GB and so forth for a decent pre-owned HP. Thanks for the info.

The 17 rd. mags are specific to the SA-35, but Mec-gar makes/sells the 15 rder that just have the 13 rd mag "dimple" removed from the mag body.

Here's a source for 10 rd. BHP mags.

My Mach1 Israeli BHP came with the traditional 13 rd mag. as do all the ones they offer.

My BHP came originally in a 10 rd mag.
Got the higher capacity after the rule change .

From what I've read the SA 35 comes with a single 15 rd. mag, which I could own/carry due to the carve out for retired LEOs. That's if I wanted an SA 35. However, as I said, I'm kinda' soured on them due to the glitches previously mentioned, which I have not heard have been addressed by Springfield as of yet. It's the new FN Hi Power (17 rd. mag) I can't get in NJ. The dealers won't stock them because of the mag restrictions here and most can't be bothered to request a special order with just 10 or 15 round mags, or even with no mags so you could buy your own legal mags. A friend of mine just went through this with Cabela's when trying to buy a Ruger semi- auto. He wanted a Max-9 (ships with a 12 rd. mag). They would not make any accommodations for him. They would not do a special order for a pistol with a 10 rd. mag. or even with no mag. An older HP with a 13 rd. mag would work for me due to the carve out. I just have to find one. I saw one on GB with a starting bid of $900, but it looked pretty beat.

13 & 15 rd Mac-Gar BHP mags are readily available in the $20-30 range from many sources. More so the 13s than the 15's right now.

The New 17rd FN Hi Power mags may not be compatible with the new "reimaged" FN Hi-Power.
