M1A: Too Outdated for Self-Defense, or Best Bug-Out Gun Ever?

The article is really about the 18" Scout Squad and how the mid-length barrel is your best choice for general purpose use, and this is something I have been telling all that will listen since the late 90's.

Follow this advice if you want to shrink the overall length of your Bush/Scout M1A, replace the factory muzzle device secured with a castle nut with one of the gas lock front sights and threaded muzzle devices from Smith Enterprise. I like the the HK style gas lock front sight with a DC Vortex flash hider. You may like the dovetail gas lock front sight and one of the muzzle brakes SEI offers for the 18" barrel.

The Army just chose a bulkier gun with much heavier ammo. It seems like the trade off is more situational than obvious.
