Personally, having done both dozens of times, I think the 870 is easier to strip and reassemble. But that's just a personal opinion; yours is valid too, I suppose. My 500 has dual bars. Never heard of any failures or other issues with the older single bar models though.
Like you I don't care for 870s. And I always thought they were a pain to break down.
Yeah I think I'm just used to the 500. I didn't like the way the bolt came out with the carrier on the 870. Every time you strip it you may as well do the bolt. I don't mess with the bolt on the 500 except maybe every 1000 rounds.Personally, having done both dozens of times, I think the 870 is easier to strip and reassemble. That sounds like a fine combination. I need to replace the dead tritium bead on my M500, and put one on my 870. I'll take your use of the "XS tritium big dot" as an endorsement, and look into getting those. Thanks! The Cruiser is kept out of the safe in a fast access/concealed location, loaded with low-recoil #4 buck. It’s got an XS tritium big dot front sight, but pretty vanilla beyond that.
I could write a whole magazine article-length piece on "870 vs 500," and perhaps I shall. I have over 50 years experience with one, and nearly that much with the other. I like both systems, but each has advantages and disadvantages over the other.Yeah I think I'm just used to the 500. I didn't like the way the bolt came out with the carrier on the 870. They’re both severely disadvantaged compared to a couple of the modern auto loaders.I could write a whole magazine article-length piece on "870 vs 500," and perhaps I shall. So do I!!!!I want one.
Gun Review - The Mossberg .410 590 Shotgun - The Truth About Guns
Mossberg has taken their prizes fighting shotgun and shrunk it and we have the tiny .410 590 in hand to see if smaller can be better.www.thetruthaboutguns.com

I'm not doubting your word on that. I have NO DOUBT that modern auto shotguns have made major strides the last few decades. They’re both severely disadvantaged compared to a couple of the modern auto loaders.
Someplace, there’s a picture of me and my Benelli M1 going “anti-aircraft mode” when shooting clays at a buddy’s for fun…basically have 4 or 5 hulls in midair (I was, for all intents & purposes, bump firing it).I can run that 500 as fast or faster than anyone and it won’t even come close to keeping up with a 1301.
Mine are paid for.I'm not doubting your word on that. I have NO DOUBT that modern auto shotguns have made major strides the last few decades.
However, my 870 and three 500s still have one major advantage over any and all of them: They are paid-for, and long ago, too.
Good for you. I'm pretty sure I have less in all four of mine than even ONE of yours would cost today. And I can, if need be, arm three of my neighbors. And train them how to run them in about 10 minutes.Mine are paid for.
I have a total of about 18 shotguns. Many of which I didn’t have to pay for. 4 or 5 are autos and one of the several pump actions holds 25 rounds. I could arm my whole block.Good for you. Your move.

I agree, that's why I'm seriously considering the new Kel-Tec KSG .410.People may sneer at a .410, but…out of that 20” barrel, 5 pellets of 000 buck at 1300fps is not a mosquito bite…and the ability to put more in target as fast as you can work the slide is a big benefit.
I agree, I have a few of both and the 870 is definitely easier to disassemble and reassemble.Personally, having done both dozens of times, I think the 870 is easier to strip and reassemble. But that's just a personal opinion; yours is valid too, I suppose.
