I guess that's certainly a possibility, but if all they needed was to shave off an ounce or two of weight, it looks like a couple of lightning cuts on the slide would have accomplished that for a lot less trouble than engineering a whole new aluminum frame.
I wonder if Sig wanted to come out with an aluminum frame to maybe use on future X-FIVE offerings like maybe a X-FIVE Short. All they have to do now is to modify this aluminum frame a bit and they could use it on a X-FIVE Short (compact) version.
It makes sense to me that Sig might be planning ahead and this aluminum frame will be used on future products.
If I remember correctly the X-FIVE Short used a all steel frame with a 4.4" barrel, which is the same size barrel the X-FIVE Legion uses only with the added on comp. Delete the comp, use the 4.4" barrel and aluminum frame, use standard G-10 grips instead of the heavy tungsten infused ones on the Legion, and you have a lightweight X-FIVE Short. Maybe.
The current US made P 226 X-FIVE is optics ready.
