Officers Down in America

Thank you Hayes for shining light on our fallen law enforcement officers. The jobs they do are so under appreciated by a lot of our fellow citizens. I am so thankful for those folks who are called to this career.
The year I entered policing the number of officers killed in the U.S. was 227 total all causes. Historically about half or more have been from traffic crashes. That number increased through the 70's but tapered off for a combination of factors including body armor, tactical equipment, SWAT teams, seat belts, air bags, training, and tactics. When I was a police chief the chief's association set a goal of lowering that number below 100. The goal has not been reached. In 2024 the number was 145, the lowest number in recent years. I suspect that in part was affected by some police backing off aggressive, proactive policing. As we take on illegal criminal gangs and cartels I anticipate an increase number feloniously killed in the next few yesrs. If there is any good news for officer survival, far more attempted murders of officers are committed that officers survived, due to improvements in body armor, training and tactics, and trauma centers. Bad people are trying to kill our officers at an alarming rate.
