So it’s been 28 days since I started this adventure and I have a lot to update so I apologize for the lengthy post.
First this is the tablet that allows me to control almost everything in the RV….
I won’t go into detail but I will say in the climate control section there are two settings for Air Conditioning.
One is Auto and the other is designated with a snow flake, well of course I had to try that first, let’s just say it should have just said “to hang meat”
I now use the auto setting.
I spent 2 weeks in Corpus Christi at a national park with no hookup’s so water and battery conservation was paramount, fortunately generator use was permitted.
Two days before leaving I spent time getting ready to travel and found something very disappointing, I remember mentioning in a previous post that the RV had a great pantry however while getting read to move I found the shelves in the pantry were starting pull away from the walls and collapse.
The reason is they were constructed with staples. Wow. Well the carpenter in me kicked in and I spent a solid day reinforcing and supporting each shelf.
I see no issues going forward.
The day I left Corpus my girlfriend left for San Antonin so I traveled alone without her following me. I did fine but chose a route to my next destination that the road was just horrible and yet still designated as a 75mph highway.
I’m currently in a small Texas town called Carrizo Springs, it’s not a border town being 45 minutes from Eagle Pass, I found a RV park with a great monthly rate and full hookups. It’s definitely a no frills park but at just pennies more than $10 a night with city water, electric and sewer hookups at each site it’s a steal.
This is where my next adventure begins, being a 5th wheel RV it attaches to my truck using two things, in the truck is the hitch……
A lot smaller but similar to what a semi tractor trailer uses. The lever on the left,
“Yellow handle” controls the locking mechanism.
On the RV what attaches to this is called a Pin Box….
It’s hard to see but the “pin” on the bottom left is what attaches to the hitch using a locking mechanism. No safety chains however there is cable that from a switch next to the Pin Box the cable attaches to the trucks hitch and if the locking mechanism fails the and the RV slides back the cable pulls out the pin and the RV’s brakes are activated.
Back in December I joined several Facebook groups and in one there was a discussion about the brand of Pin Box that I have on my RV The short version is it has issues, well mine does and upon arriving in Carrizo Springs and following a close inspection I found a very disturbing situation. The following picture shows gaping and steel plates that are slightly bending.
A quick note the Pin Box is bolted to a solid framework of steel that is attached to the RV
After some research I found that (Curt) the brand of PB that i have is owned by Lippert and after contacting them it took two pictures and an hour for Lippert to decide to
“under warranty” replace my Pin Box assembly. So now here I sit waiting for the delivery of my new Pin Box which is scheduled for delivery this coming Wednesday.
More to come……..
