Oops! — Top 7 Gun Cleaning Mistakes

well i for one have not yet cleaned any of my magazines...but that time will come, and not because of this article.

i found it "funny" that it is said DO NOT oil the magazine, when i have seen some youtube videos where the guy cleaning said to wipe the inside and the spring lightly with oil......

Almost everyone on YouTube is a moron. Oil attracts dirt. Never oil springs, period. I don't oil RSAs either. I clean them with a microfiber cloth and if I ever do need to use something to clean them I make sure they are completely dried afterwards.

i know, i do not oil RSA either.

when i do watch a "how to video", as soon as the guy starts saying things like, "Uh, i think this is something", or, "i'm not sure"...

i leave...too many, "know it all's, that don't know 5hit"

Well anyone can make a YT video. Just like these days anyone can be a gun writer. Back in the day the vast majority of "Experts" actually knew what they were talking about.

#8 - not listening to old timers and using random, general home remedies.

Had a range instructor continually discourage the use of wd40 and any over oiling, He couldn’t say enough about excessive oils on handguns. One peeve was the too much oil might seep and find its way into the cartridge primer to cause a FTF.
Lint was another peeve he stressed, it really sops up the oils and eventually dries out and packs up into crevices.

2¢: Many people think WD40 is some miracle potion and rely on advice rather than read the label. There was a website recently, I don’t recall the name but it was like a “life-hack” site, offering everyday tips, suggestions and how-to on repurposing stuff. Someone posted a ‘one of many uses’ for using WD40, one by spraying it on kids shoes to make them “waterproof”, another was to spray it in window sill to keep bugs away. Geesh !
It’s a fine product, but theres a time and place for wd40 - if they just read the label.

3¢: Another product thats misleading and misused is the amour-all type surface shine enhancers. Ive seen goobers put that stuff on their motorcycle tires and their seats. Few years ago, bought a classic car. I have so much of that mist embedded into my carpet, obviously over sprayed for decades, that every time I vacuum I still feel the greasy film on my hands. I’m still regularly deep-foam cleaning the carpet to get this stuff out.

Hi,

I know I tend to over-lubricate a little bit, sometimes. I'm trying to break myself of this habit. I do read the manual so that I oil ONLY where necessary. ;) I always end up wiping off the excess with microfiber cloth. Shame on me. Wasteful. :p

I used to clean after EVERY range trip. I guess I'm getting lazy. Lately I'll clean after three or four range trips. I don't have a large armory so all my units get used and cleaned at least once a month.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I used to over lubricate, too….
Bushmills or Jameson’s, usually.

( hiccup !)

Someone once commented that I clean my guns like my life depends on it. Well, yeah.

There are two reasons for lubricating a gun. One is to lubricate the friction surfaces so they operate properly. Second is to prevent corrosion. You can't just dump a bunch of oil in there and hope for the best. Having the right amount of grease in the right place on friction surfaces to ensure smooth operation is important. Note I said grease, because it will stay put where you want it and generally not migrate to places where you don't want it. TW25 grease from a syringe does the trick. When you clean the gun you need to get all the old oil and grease off and start over when done cleaning. I have lived and used firearms in Florida for 43 years and have learned that a spritz of Remoil on the exposed surfaces followed by wiping the excess away keeps the rust away. It ain't rocket surgery, you just have to be meticulous.

I've heard that it's "run your pistols dry (judicious use of lubricant where it's supposed to go) and your rifles wet (assuming AR platform)" Not sure if that's technically true but I have a light touch with the Hoppe's on my pistols but get a little more liberal on the BCG of my AR. Feel free to correct me if I'm off base :coffee:

Happy Labor Day, Amigos.

well
i clean mine after every range trip
if go to the blind and rifle just sits there looking pretty, it gets wiped down with a moist oil cloth to remove finger prints and any other dust or stuff
all my handguns are oiled and get wiped out prior to first round of the day, at the range

but my 1911s no matter what...i can run a snake and wipe em down and i still get the I LOVE you oil spray the 1st few rounds

i have never put parts in that dont belong i guess it could happen. but not sure how
and never put in extra parts or leave stuff out??? i truly dont know how that happens unless you take down multiple firearms at same time

all my xds get torn down one at a time and put back same order

1911s same same one at a time..

i try not to get rushed and if i do get rushed they get cleaned after the even that rushed me like dinner or stuff

the only firearm i get real slow with, is the ar10... that animal has alot of moving parts. i might over clean it

magazines always get wiped and popped the spring out on about every 100 rounds and yes, i lightly oil spring and wipe it down
never knew it was not to get cleaned and wiped with a light oil?? seems to me not to make sense, stuff moves inside it and the spring really moves around.
learned something new today

as far as wd40...hmmm we have an old single shot .410 that is used to shoot mole rats..it gets lots of sand or dirt blown back so wd 40 is used to flush the barrel , followed by gun oil on a swabb
