Ordered a New Pocket Pistol

Over the last few years I’ve thought about replacing my 33 year old Colt Mustang Pocketlite that is my summer carry, but nothing really tempted me enough to follow through. However, ever since Ruger released the LCP MAX last year I’ve been tempted to see if this could be the pistol to replace my Pocketlite. Unfortunately, during the crazy gun buying of the Covid era I could never find one to handle to see how it felt in my hand. I finally had the chance to handle one yesterday and I liked it so much I ordered one. It should be in sometime next week, I hope. The magazine capacity along with the size and weight of the pistol is what attracted me to the LCP MAX. With a full magazine the Ruger should come in around 14 ounces.

Here's a picture of my Colt that will be heading into semi-retirement. With a full magazine the Mustang weighs fourteen and a half ounces. If the Ruger can’t match the reliability of the Colt then it will be coming out of retirement.

That's a pretty slick looking little pocket gun... I'm not quite there yet on the pocket guns and the .380 caliber in general but a friend recently picked up a Walther PPK in stainless and that started changing my mind lol.

I've sold alot of the Ruger LCP/LCP II and LCP MAX guns lately and it's gotten me curious. Let me know how it shoots!
 
I love my lcp max. I can carry it in my pocket and not even know it’s there. It has replaced my j frame which is being moved to ankle carry. It’s also great for carrying in places where carrying can be discouraged.
For the record my aiwb is a P365xl with wc grip.

Heck, I think it even uses the same mags.

I really enjoy my Max -- it's small, light and fits great. You will enjoy yours also.

BTW, where did you find that fantastic set of grips? They would look great on my RO Elite.
 
I have the original Ruger LCP, been very reliable to me, just the trigger is long and heavy, but I guess this is how they make it safe since no safeties are on the gun.
 
The replacement pistol for my Colt came into my local sporting goods store yesterday. The LCP MAX feels better in my hands than the Colt Mustang did. The gun range I go to is closed today and tomorrow because of a winter storm in our area...bummer. I'm hoping this Ruger is reliable enough to use as a concealed carry gun.

My new pocket pistol with a couple of the other pistols I’ve carried over the years. The 25 ACP Colt Junior and the 380 Colt Mustang have the same unloaded weight. The Ruger LCP MAX weighs two and a quarter ounces less than the Colts and has a higher round capacity.

I carried an LCP II as my backup gun for a few years. I loved the LCP II, and bought an LCP Max as soon as I could find one in stock. I like the increased capacity of the Max, but what really sold me was that it had a usable front night sight. The only that I didn't love about the LCP II was the tiny black-on-black sights (which were still an improvement over the original LCP).

My LCP II was strictly used as a backup gun for my EDC, or as a pocket gun when exercising outdoors. With the increased capacity and useable sights, I've found myself carrying the LCP Max as my only gun way more often than I ever expected. The LCP Max is my ideal pocket gun and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine. The only thing that would make me change it out is if Springfield would offer a 911 with similar capacity.

I am curious as to how the trigger compares between the LCP II and the max.
 
I like the magazine pinky extension that Ruger includes in the box. The magazine loader and pocket holster that come with the gun are OK but I would trade them for a second magazine. Having a magazine loader for putting the 9th and 10th round in the magazine is a real thumb saver. For grins I ordered the 12 round magazine.

I find the trigger on the LCP Max to be similar to the LCP II, and a vast improvement over the original LCP or LCP Custom. It has a steady pull, is not gritty, and breaks cleanly with a good reset. I think the Max has an excellent trigger, especially for an affordable pocket-gun, but my rating may not be worth much because I am notoriously not picky about triggers. Of all the guns that I have ever fired, there are only a handful of triggers that I didn't like.
 
I like my LCP II so it sounds like the max would be a good bet for an upgrade. I never bought the original LCP because of the heavy trigger. Thank you for your input about the trigger of the max.
 
I'm heading out to look at one of these today, will probably take it home. Been carrying a Bodyguard in my pocket for a few years but I would like to have more than 6+1. That's probably why I haven't picked one up with the integrated Crimson Trace laser. My one question is something Hickok45 talked about in his review, do any of you that shoot them find your finger gets pinched at the top of the trigger? Having the trigger bite me seems like it would be a training deterrent.
 
I haven't had my finger pinched by the trigger with the LCP MAX. I did look at my pistol today and I think if you have your finger high up on the trigger it can definitely get pinched on the reset. I always have my finger low on the trigger to get the best leverage so not an issue for me. I noticed that Hickok 45 tends to put his finger on the trigger almost up to the first joint when he shoots the little pistols so that might be why he was getting trigger bite. Before you buy one dry fire it in the store a number of times to see if you get trigger bite. Dry firing will not damage the LCP MAX and the owner's manual actually recommends dry firing for practice.

So far I'm thrilled with the LCP MAX. I've shot various types of ammo through it without a hiccup. Yesterday I shot it using both the 12 round and 10 rounds magazine. I'm glad Ruger included a magazine loader with the pistol because getting the last two rounds into the magazines without it is almost impossible for me. I love the Tritium front sight, it really pops in low light. The pistol also came with a so-so pocket holster. The MAX is light enough that it doesn't feel like I'm carrying a brick in my pocket. This morning I loaded 12 + 1 rounds of 95 grain ammo in the pistol, put the pistol in the holster and weighed it. It came in at 16 and 1/8 ounces. As far as I'm concerned Ruger has set the standard for pocket pistols.

So far I've fired 150 rounds through the pistol. I haven't cleaned it yet and today I will be shooting another 50 rounds through it. If there are no hiccups today it becomes my new concealed carry pistol. Hopefully this pistol will be as durable as my Colt Mustang Pocketlite.
 
3 shops (and 45 miles) into my search and I managed to find one in stock and at a decent price $349. I dry fired it a couple of times at the store and had no problem with the trigger catching any skin, although I did figure out how to make that happen once I got home. But you're right, Hickok45 does put a lot of finger on the trigger and it's high up, I don't foresee that being an issue for me. I never really had an issue with the heavy trigger on my Bodyguard, but this one feels WAY nicer.

I'm going through the manual now and will be disassembling and cleaning it before I take it out to run some rounds through it. I don't love the idea of having to pry out the takedown pin with a screwdriver, seems like I'm gonna scratch up a brand new gun in the process. Tried a plastic pick but it wasn't strong enough to move the pin.

One thing I find a little odd is that the slide seems kinda loose. It has some lateral play if I shake it from side to side or just push on the sides of the slide. Is this common with these? I've checked all my other pistols real quick and none of the other ones do this.

While I was there I ordered a couple of the 12 round mags, they didn't have any spares in stock.
