They were quite real. I’ve run across both at gun shows over the years.

Hans, I vaguely remember hearing about the S&W's, though don't honestly know if I actually believed the story at the time. You know, on some rare occasions, a gunman will stretch the truth much like a fisherman. Yeh, I know that's hard to believe but it's true ..........................

On the other hand, I had never heard of the Ruger conversions. It makes sense though now that I think about it.
