Thank you for this great article. I appreciate the chance to see the actual letter.
As a child, I was privileged to meet and talk with many WW II and Korean War veterans when my Father would take me with him to the VFW. At one time or another, many of the combat-infantry veterans indicated a very deep and sincere feeling of respect bordering on love for the M1 Garands they had carried in the war.
Several had acquired M1 Garands on the grounds that it was much easier to fall asleep knowing that an M1 Garand was close at hand.
