Powder River Precision Trigger Upgrade Kit

Warfaremil

Operator
Just trying to gauge everyone’s opinion on the Powder River Precision Trigger Upgrade Kit. I recently bought an full size XD9 and having a difficult time getting used to the trigger’s very long pull. It seems almost exorbitant.

I am thinking of upgrading the trigger and springs and wanted to get some opinions on the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

Still trying to decide whether or not to replace/upgrade the trigger assembly. I don’t mind doing the work but that is not really the problem.

The biggest issue is the cost of the upgraded parts. Being retired and on a fixed income makes for some very serious considerations. Sure, I’ve been working part time to buy luxury items but I just want to be sure it is the right thing to do.

The pistol operates just fine…I can get used to the trigger reset and over travel in time. Having a new Hogue grip does help so would replacing key components do more harm than good? I don’t know.

While getting ready for bed tonight, I suddenly remembered a phrase that was coined by former POTUS, Calvin Coolidge, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”! Seems to fit this situation!!!

I recall seeing on the Springfield Armory Warranty Card that ANY upgrades to the pistol (ie upgrading the trigger,ec) will VOID the pistol’s warranty! It may not seem like much but should something happen while shooting the pistol, it could cost $$$ to fix it!

I've never seen a need to upgrade from the OEM triggers in all my XD/XDS/XDms.
I haven't either, however, my brother-in-law got a turd disguised as a 9mm XDS that required the upgrade. It was a turd too. Elevation on the sights was off by 12" at 20 feet, trigger was atrocious. The trigger upgrade definitely helped although did nothing for the sights. Every once in a while everyone lets a turd slip from the factory.

I checked the website regarding SA warranty. As long as the original purchaser still owns the pistol, the warranty does not expire.

Instead of upgrading the trigger, I would have contacted SA and to see how best to handle the situation.

My pistol functions as it should and hit the target numerous times. I am reluctant to upgrade the trigger because the pistol is brand new and SAs warranty.

Any modifications to the gun will void the warranty, the warranty is lifetime to the original owner. Some manufacturers even void the warranty if you use reloaded ammo.

So I installed one on my xdm. I had heard of light primer strikes from this forum when using the PRP firing pin spring, so I didn’t install any of the slide parts just the frame parts. Made a big difference for me. I also kept all the original parts just in case I need to send pistol in, can drop those parts back prior to sending it to Springfield. If I ever need too. Doesn’t sound like a lot ever have to go in.

It eliminates nearly all the take up. I forgot my original pull weight, want to say at 5 pounds or so but what i didn’t like was the longer take up and mushy break. Now there is barely any take up and nice clean break.

Triggers pulls weights on a couple guns for comparison using Lyman digital scale:

New 1911 operator 4lbs 12 ounces
Range officer compact 4lbs 10 ounces
Xdm with PRP 4 pounds 6-8 ounces.

Now I just need a red dot adapter and red dot to install on it. It’s a very fun gun to shoot.

I did buy a PRP trigger kit for my xds mod 2 45 as well, but have not installed it. That gun gets carried so I haven’t fully committed to modifying the trigger or not. They are a lot cheaper for the xds than they are for the xd or xdm.

At this point, I am going to upgrade the trigger assembly. I recall hearing that even SA (unofficially) acknowledges that the trigger springs should be replaced even though such work might void their warranty. In several years, I may regret not upgrading the assembly when I had the chance. I am planning on fully retiring and finally leaving work by the end of Summer. I’ll save the extra parts because it doesn’t hurt to have spares “just in case” - Warranty or no Warranty.

I realize SA might be trying to CYA by not wanting the liability involving replacing parts in the firearms. But it begs the question of who’s pistol is it? As it is my pistol and I feel that replacing parts to improve the function, then that’s what I’ll do!
