Probably a Stupid Question About 1911 Magazines...

As long as we are talking about springs and given the fact that I'm pretty much still a noob, does ramming the mag full of rounds and then storing it weaken the spring? I worry too much I think... right now I only have 4 in each mag, stored in my house. Yes, I realize that makes the "7 or 8" mag thingy a moot point!

Conventional wisdom says loading and unloading the mag wears the springs, not leaving them loaded.

Personally, I only load 7 into an 8 rd mag if it’s going to sit awhile - but I’ll unload that mag after a week or 10 days and load up another mag. So I guess I rotate mine.

As far as loading a mag to full capacity and “storing“ it, as you stated, I wouldn’t store a loaded at all. Having a couple full up for a while and ready for use is no issue. But get enough mags to give them a regular break!

Has anyone used Ed Brown 1911 .45ACP 8 round mags yet? Opinions? Thought of getting a few to try out is all.
I bought Ed Brown mags first, they had a trade-up program for the Pez Dispensers that come with the firearm. They did seem better-made and definitely had a stronger spring. But I kept hearing about WC and so I took the leap of faith and sold the Ed Browns on eBay and ordered two WCs. OhMyGoodnessSakies as my wife says, just the feel of the construction on the WC mags is better by a big margin. I grabbed two more during the Black Friday sale. Yes I only have 4 mags right now, but I really like the these WC's. Granted, I'm not a longtime experienced shooter, but just on build quality and the strength of the spring and the way it feels when I load 'em, if the stock mags were a 1 then the Ed Brown would be a 4 and the WC a 10. Just my $.02... after tax and 401K deduction.

I own a few Wilson Combat mags, but my favorites are the Chip McCormick (CMC) flush-fit 8-round mags. I would use mags w/ base pads if I were competing or quickly dropping a lot of mags, but I don’t do a lot of rapid reloads with my 1911’s. I also prefer the look and feel of the flush magazines.

You definitely upgraded Paulie.

So I purchased (more like invested) in 4 Wilson Combat magazines for my 1911 Range Officer, and I got the 7+1 because I don't know any better and that's what the 1911 shipped with. So Bill offers 8+1 magazines... should I have gotten those? If it can hold an extra round, why even make a 7+1? Does it simply stick out a bit further, or is that a design for certain types of 1911's?
you still have a set of a great brand of magazines.

you can use them, or save them and go and buy the 8 rnd ones of you want.

or you can return those (might get hit with a restocking fee however)

On thinking about it Paulie, I’d use the 7 rounders at the range & practice sessions, and just get a couple 8’s to have for “nightstand duty” ( or for carry purposes, assuming u plan to carry).

Depending on setup, flared magwell or not, is sometimes nice to have a variety of different mags and mag lengths for different scenarios and types of carry.

There are also bumper pads and mag extensions available for some if wanting a longer mag with shorter 7 round mags too, like with flared magwells.
