Question on Wadcutter Ammo

Yep, I understand that completely, the rounds tearing a bit around the edges were bullet hit. I was just curious (so started the thread) why the wadcutters tears look like they’re 2” in length and they are all, without exception, fully horizontal. Much different type of hits on the target it appears to me.

Again, it’s the target paper.

Your bullets aren’t keyholing. This isn’t a twist issue whatsoever.

The paper is tearing because it doesn't have a backer.

Try shooting a piece of cardboard.

Agree, depending on the composition of the paper it may or may not happen. It does not happen with something sturdy behind the paper.

If I remember correctly my custom made PPC revolver was built on a S&W K-14 38 spl frame that has a shorter cylinder reducing the bullet jump into the forcing cone. Don't recall ever having bullets key hole.

We were shooting cardboard backed targets in matches as well and wadcutters are usually pretty mild loads

Way back when I loaded 148 gr hollow based wadcutters upside down for my S&W M-60. Figured it would make a good close range defensive round. The rounds key holed and many tumbled and were not very accurate. No doubt there would be very little penetration due to the tumbling and lack of velocity. Never tried the load in longer barrels might have been more effective.
