questions about being an NRA instructor

Old_Me

SAINT
for those of you that actually know about this, or are one, here is the set up, then questions

i belong to a private gun club, since June of this year. it is mandatory to take thier class on gun safety, shooting, 2 handed and one handed.

when the class finished, we took a written test.

i received a certificate, that states....

"(old_me) has successfully completed the Basics of Pistol Shooting

Marksmanship Skill Level: Level 4

__________________________________________________________

ok, so i never asked at the club, what level 4 meant.

and frankly, i just put the certificate away in the book, until last night. (yeah i know since June!!)

so i did some online searching at the NRA....but found the explanation
at another link.... https://www.gettrainedbeready.com/resources/BOPS_ILT.pdf

here is what i found:

Instructor Level Qualification (Level 4) Instructors can also take this opportunity to allow the students the opportunity to shoot to the same qualification standard that an NRA Certified Instructor must shoot. For Level 4, use the NRA Instructor Training Qualification Target. Have the student shoot 20 shots from 45 feet. If they are able to place 16 of the 20 shots within a six inch group, the student would earn the level 4 endorsement. Each endorsement is something they would be proud to share with their friends and family.

_______________________________________________________________________________

as i said, my certificate says i am at a level 4.......

does this mean that i am an instructor ??

to also get answers, i did minutes ago, email the NRA themselves, how long they take to respond, is another matter.

thanks in advance.

Most likely your time ran out to register your quals, but that is how I read the course description you posted.
If you can hit the targets, you're an instructor!

I am an NRA Instructor. There are some other specifics to being a NRA Pistol Instructor besides the qualification on the range. There is classroom testing as well, part of which is pitching a a portion of the class to your peers and instructor. Upon your completion of the entire course you should have received a NRA Instructor Certificate and registered on the NRA instructor website.

we did have classroom testing, but none of us got up to speak(??) to the others.

so, maybe i am not an instructor???

but nothing was ever told to any of us, other than, the club "had a member" that went thru the same class, and was kicked out of the club, cuz he was conducting "classes" at the club for a while, before they found out, and pocketing the money.

and i have no problem speaking in front of people. i was for 3 years a CDL classroom instructor.

From here on out you will be affectionately known as
“Instructor Me”

The instructor has 10 days to log your registration and you have 30 days to pay for your rating.
Sounds like none of this was done. Log into NRAinstructors.org and see if anything comes up.
If you do not have a profile, you will have to create one.

trying to do this, i enter my NRA membership number, name, zip code, but get...

"invalid details"

i even entered my club's "key fob" number, as it's as long as the instructor's NRA number at the club, that is on the certificate....

so i guess it's a no go.......

so i'm thinking none of this was done.

maybe, i can "assist" for the club only...??

is this a possibility...??

i dunno, kinda disappointed now

coulda been some part time money to supplement my SS checks.

but too, i left the information at the fish and tackle store, where i get my reloaded ammo. there is a customer that goes there, and he will get this too, maybe he can help me get what i need, as he IS an NRA instructor....?

i just never met him, the store manager told me this when i went to see if he knew anything about this certificate that i got.

up to now, guys, thanks a whole lot, it is very much appreciated...!!!!

just got a response from my club's X/O, regarding NRA instructor training.

Hey Old_Me,

Good to hear from you.

Yes, we do plan on providing classes for club members to do just that this coming year.

I’ve copied (club secretary/NRA Instructor) , who is putting something together, and will include you in future updates.

Excellent news, better than trying to recreate old records.
most likely will mean i'll have to re-do this first class all over again. or maybe not.....that's to be seen at that later date.

being a club member, the price may be lower than say if i was to set up something with someone else.

i only paid $100 for this first part, and it as i said early, was at least an 8 hour long class.

Old Me, your situation is unclear to me so please forgive me if I am telling you something you already know. If the course you took is Basic Pistol, it does not count toward instructor certification, other than to show that you shot a sufficient score to attend the instructor course, and it is a pre-requisite for the pistol instructor course. Your basic pistol certificate, if that's what you have, should qualify you to take the instructor course provided you get the requisite number of hits. The instructor course is a whole different animal, and it can only be taught by an NRA Training Counselor. It is a 16 hour course including instructor techniques. Once you have a basic instructor certification you can expand into other areas of instruction such as CCW, rifle, shotgun, personal protection, etc.

yes, i have the:

i do not have the score, the NRA instructor at my gun club, might still have that, in his records.

my club's executive officer (X/O) was contacted by me, via email yesterday.

i had told him i'd like to pursue being an NRA instructor, how far i go after i can become an NRA instructor is up in the air at the moment.

the X/O at my club, has cc'd my emails to the NRA instructor/club secretary (the man who's signature is on this certificate) for the list he is compiling for the new year.

just when that will take place? i have no idea.

frankly, i am as beside myself as i can be, wondering what is going on, and did not want to assume anything

i had even emailed the NRA themselves, and haven't gotten any response yet as of this moment.

so i was sending out requests, here on this site, the store where i get my ammo, (where a new NRA instructor goes as well, but was unavailable), the NRA themselves, and the gun club's X/O for help, answers, advice.

my biggest gripe, is that i "tossed" this certificate in the NRA book back in June, when i got it, and didn't ask questions back then, and followed thru back then.....i take blame for procrastinating on this.

Way back many years ago I held 5 certificates, including 'Training Counselor'. I did a few classes every now and then, but at the time I was still young, virile, and reasonably strong. But even then my plan was never to do a lot of classes back then, but to count on using my instructor credentials and do several classes a year once I retired.

Well, unfortunately I had an unexpected "Widow Maker" in 2001, so obviously I did even fewer classes during my long recovery. Not knowing how that was all going to turn out, I let my credentials lapse, along with several other renewable things, expecting to pick them back up at some point. Then in 2006-7, as I was finally getting my feet back under me and my stamina back where it should have been, I had 4 major back surgeries in just 13 months. Another set back from any attempts at multiple classes in any rating for another couple years. And although I did teach a few folks in basic gun handling on a 'friend to friend' basis, I always made it clear I would not be providing them any type of certification until I had renewed my certifications and gotten back into teaching regularly.

Now I didn't tell you all my medical issues to get a little sympathy, or any thing else except that later on a few more years, around 2010 maybe, don't remember the exact year, I decided to finally get started into setting up some classes for real. But again 'real life' got in the way ..... The next thing that happened was some family (parents) health issues that took a considerable amount of my time so once again, the classes took a second seat.

When I finally got around to renewing my NRA certs, I was informed that they would no longer bring them up to date for me because the record keeping at the NRA headquarters had changed at some point and no previous membership numbers nor instructor certifications would be honored. I was a little miffed at first thinking that the certifications of any classes would be the same regardless of the year, so why not. I had actually worked seriously for those certifications and I was proud of them. At most I expected maybe a few refreshers, and maybe a delinquent fee. But after awhile, I just let it go and now will live with the regret in not keeping them up to date and current even if I wasn't able to teach.

So, just a little advice, if you become a certified instructor, and find it's something you truly want to do, take care of your credentials. Don't do as I did and expect them to be always available. Oh well, we live and learn, huh?

once becoming an NRA instructor,

1) how much does it cost to keep them??

2) how many years do you have to recertify? each year, 2 years, 3 years, etc, etc?

3) how do you recertify, by just paying a fee or taking shooting and written tests??

4) is there a "grace period" if you don't recertify in xx number of days from the due date?

thanks in advance.
