Hello gang!
It's been over a month since I've had a practice session, since before my cruise. This evening, after I knocked on doors all afternoon, I took 100 rounds, my XD9 and VP9, down to the closer indoor range for a quick comparison in rustiness and mediocrity. The range wasn't busy at 4pm so I was able to obtain my favorite sandbox.
I'm using some new-to-me targets, NRA B-34, with a 4" reactive circle stuck in the middle. I was hoping it would help me to "aim small, miss small". I brought along 100 rounds of S&B 124 grain to put through my main 9mm carry pistols.
The plan was to shoot 5-shot strings, 5 rounds in each magazine. I'll shoot 25 rounds through each gun at 10 yards and then another 25 rounds through each at 15 yards. This is what my old eyes were looking at from 10 yards.
I started with the XD9, 25 hits, 5 rounds at a time. I still went faster than I should have. I guess I get bored just standing there and shooting. My first target came back like this.
I don't know, that looks like 7 or 8 hits outside the 4" reactive circle. I should be able to do better than that. I promise I'll try harder next time. Then I shot the same 25 hits with my VP9. It seems I did a little better.
If you give me the line breaks it seems there are three hits outside the 4" circle. I don't know if that's because I'm warmed up now or if I really do shoot the VP9 better. We'll push them out to 15 yards and see what happens. Dang, but I can hardly see that little thing way out there.
I have to run over a few lanes to get perspective. I'm trying to get it right between the 40' and the 50' markers. I guess that's close enough to 15 yards, 45 feet.
With the XD9 at 15 yards I got a little more spread but I still count only seven hits outside the 4" circle.
I'll keep practicing at this distance and see if I can get that a little tighter. Now let's see what I can do with the VP9.
Hmm, not quite as well. It may be because there's not a lot of contrast, shooting at all the black. I count nine hits outside the 4" circle. Or I'm just in a hurry. It's a mental thing with me. Hey! Look at that! I found a partial box in my range bag. I can put 15 more rounds through each pistol for one last string. I'll stick on an 8" reactive circle and send the target back out to 10 yards. Here's the VP9 results.
I'm disappointed with those three low hits. This is one of my favorite targets, I should do better. Let's put the last 15 rounds through the XD9 and see how it fares.
Well, look at that. Pretty much the same results. I'm sure it's due to my lack of concentration. But it was great to get out on the range for some bang time. I guess this just goes to show you, accuracy is a perishable skill. At least for me, I really need to stay in practice just to keep up with my mediocrity.
Thanks for putting up with me. You guys are the best. Now I need to clean a couple of filthy pistols.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
