Hello friends and neighbors, in-laws and outlaws, range rats and burnt powder junkies,
Indeed, I was able to make it to the range two days in a row so far this week due to the fact that the fetching Mrs. BassCliff is out of town visiting her Mom. No, it's not because she's mad at me.
Mom needs some help with things once in a while and Mrs. BassCliff is a good daughter. I'm not sure if she'll be back Thursday or Friday so there is a possibility of a third trip this week. My pooch let me sleep late this morning. After taking care of Chewy and getting in my workout, I got a late start to the range so I visited the closer/older facility. There's a bunch of old school charm about this place. I procured my favorite lane #10.
Here are the stars of our show today, Ronin 9mm and Garrison .45ACP. It's been a while since Gary has been out. I'm hoping not to flinch too much. I'll be utilizing Blazer Brass 124 grain 9mm and LAX Ammunition 230 grain .45ACP. This will be more of a competition with myself, rather than between these two pistols. They both shoot much better than I do.
Today I brought small silhouettes in which to punch holes. I'll be using a B-34 (14x24) with various stickers or other target centers taped on. I'll shoot 10-shot strings for the warm-ups. For the finale I'll use the 12x18 Splatterburst silhouettes. I started with Ron and the first target came back like this.
Full disclosure: There was one more flyer down below the "7" on the bottom. I missed it in the picture. Oops. Otherwise I got seven hits dangerously close to my Coop sticker. I'll patch up this target with a 4" Splatterburst and see what's next.
I had stuck on a 1" red dot for a bullseye (easier for these old eyes to see) but it got shot off after a couple of hits, hence the yellow center. As you can see, seven hits on the target, two just off, and one bad flyer. Drat. I'll patch up this target again for more remote hole punching. Target #3 came back like this.
Using the larger yellow "Coop" sticker seemed to help. The flyers aren't as bad on that one, just a few slightly off the 4" reactive circle. I found some targets that I'd printed up ages ago and thought, "Hey, there's a red bullseye. Maybe it will help." So I brought a few to try. The first one came back like this, target #4 with Ron.
OK, the group is starting to tighten up, finally. Let's try this target again. Here's #5.
Wow, that's a really tight group but with one flyer. Drat. That's 50 rounds through the Ron. It's time to move on to Gary. I haven't shot this one for a while. I think you'll be able to tell. Here's target #1 from the Garrison .45.
Yeah, a lot of low-left. I think I'm going to try that "crush grip" we were reading about earlier from the Ayoob article. I put some red dots in the X ring of this B-8 center. Target #2 is a little better, only two hits out of the black. Maybe more "crush"?
Target #3 is another B-8 center with the yellow "Coop" circle stuck on the X ring. I can see this one a little better. It came back like this.
All in the black! That's pretty good for me. OK, I want to see where I'm shooting this thing so I'll use a couple of 8" reactive circles. Here's target #4.
I took a pause halfway through the magazine and realized I was shooting low. I adjusted my sight picture hold and got the last few very close to the bullseye. We'll do the same thing for target #5. Here is the result.
OK, even more hits close to the center. Maybe the "crush grip" is working.
Now it's time for the finale. My plan is to put 50 rounds on a reactive silhouette target with both pistols, trying to make a big ragged hole. I made sure that both targets were aligned with the 30 foot markings on the wall. (That's why I like lane #10.)
I'll start with Ron and put 50 rounds on a fresh 12x18 reactive silhouette. It came back like this.
Then I did the same thing with Gary. The first 10 rounds went so well I had to take a closer look.
Do you think I'm "crushing the grip"?
I finished the 50 rounds with the Garrison and the target came back like this.
It seems in both cases I started off well. As I progressed through 50 rounds I would either shoot too fast, lose my concentration, or just get lazy. I can only take solace in the fact that, if this were a real threat, I could do some damage. For grins and giggles, here are the targets side by side. I think I'll have to give the nod to the Ronin for accuracy, and the Garrison for sheer destruction.
That's 100 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of .45ACP. Time to sweep my brass, pack it up, go home and feed the dog. On my way out I was window shopping for my "one of each" collection.
I'm also considering a tactical .22LR (Taurus TX22 T.O.R.O), a Glock (G17L), a Hi-Point (seriously!), a lever gun, and who knows what else. We can talk about that later.
And that was today's visit to the range. Thanks for coming along and putting up with me. I'm glad you guys don't mind too much, me spreading my nooby-ness around all over the place. It's just fun. And you guys teach me a lot. I really appreciate that. Blessings to all.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
