Greetings friends and neighbors,
It was a crisp Fall day here in the upper Midwest, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. I can't say the same for my marksmanship today but at least I got a new gun. Woot! It's so nice to be able to walk into the store, pay for the firearm, then walk into the range and shoot it. I had just picked up this Bond Arms commerative XLV.
There was no one on the range after I finished the paperwork so I got my favorite lane and practiced with my newest pistols, XD9 Mod.3, VP9, and XLV.
I brought along some Blazer Brass 9mm 124 grain, some LAX Ammo .45ACP 230 grain, and my timer. Since the range was empty I thought I'd pull off a couple of 10-10-10 drills. It's been a while.
Well, let me tell you, I am really rusty with the 10-10-10 drill, especially cold. This was my first one using the VP9. The second one wasn't much better. Although this one was completed in a little over 6 seconds, the accuracy was lousy.
For my third target I slowed down a little, un-timed, and did much better.
I sped up a little on my fourth target and spread out just a little.
I patched up this target, sent it back downrange, then sped up a little more for the next string of 10. I guess I need a little more practice.
Next up was 50 rounds through the XD9 Mod.3. No timed targets here, just trying to figure out the sight picture and hold on this new pistol. Again, 10-shot strings on each target.
Aww, c'mon. Let's see if I can get it together.
Let's go back to the B-8 center and see if that helps.
OK, that's better. I guess I need to practice more with targets other than the B-8. I'll use different stuff for my next session. Here's the last 20 rounds on a reactive target, going at a pretty good clip. I guess that's passable "combat accuracy".
And last but not least, the new Bond Arms .45ACP Derringer. I didn't even check to see if the rear sight was adjustable. It seems to shoot high. The trigger was a handful. The documentation says 6-7 pounds. You have to manipulate the trigger from the very tip to get the best leverage.
Sometimes the cases would swell and I couldn't remove them without using a spent cartridge.
This is a fun little .45 that forces you to slow down and enjoy the bang. I wish the grip was just a little longer. I had to hang my pinky finger off the grip so that my trigger finger would be placed low enough on the trigger. Otherwise you just can't pull it. I put just 20 rounds through it today. It'll be an occasional range toy. I don't think I'm going to shoot it all that much, just in case it becomes a collectable in 40-50 years.
Now I've got some pistols to clean. Excuse me.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
