Range Report: Optic and Laser Day, 12/2/24

Hey everyone,

Yes, it was a fun and interesting day at the range. I had brought my new XD9 Mod.3 with its newly installed HE507c along with the XD45 Mod.2 Tactical and its newly zeroed laser on the WML.

AP1GczNu-V7nd5M2twFdavGiX2JG35v0cWCg5RvVZ00rQOsEESUWb0VA9Y2w8pv3Hq9_yOTUvlK2JoOYgBgMrTjnYC5Q7xii8mdezh6wdYWEJCoLgKt-HvPcw3PpM8xGREhgxUMIj6uos43vztjVs4xQATKk_w=w1648-h927-s-no

I started with the XD9 and a target I don't normally use. It was given to me the last time I visited the range. I sent it out to 10 yards and turned on the Holosun with all the default and zero settings, right out of the box.

I put five hits on it and it came back like this.

AP1GczM9xrZOPLkMlsipXAM7NQvi7vov2FHfgteWILw9VdgF1L1t5TFK0OTyFBA7Wm-VJz6b5LfovB4HGSwu0sdneuBI2zeRf7nJ7MF9ZUqbfRKZyLdeXBLiG8fJURER_0lcLI_ldw8urp2H1SPYMKwSxEqKkQ=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, it's a little low but, wow, four hits in one hole. It took me a couple of strings and a couple of clicks to get it closer. Still shooting at 10 yards here.

AP1GczOiMHtpMfulBQIP8DgrCfM5x1_7nGGlYh1eCTL1K4w5jwL0C1Fh2R8CwzkSL532PNVqb0vQzgofVNmzPUNtnRZbcCqsbbYTc4mUkzOhwd6Aex1bRsjXSBY0FMgB_bgc4DTeKNGptsKtRqB72cx2T6SJvw=w1648-h927-s-no

Now that I think I've got it close, let's use a B-8 center at 10 yards and see how these old eyes can use this optic.

AP1GczP9ka8ECmAgbWEaZo5Vp2_8axWAb9cQVxDtuahVwRaR-NXSh7Gc3_-jbju6dfpJD3O914ULhTfzdymE4lCx_q2Lr_Blaah6JRpGHxKqc3mGYN24ikv4RDP1u_2q4ChYVT_hmkvATcGLY4wn1l6-hYZcOQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I guess I wasn't paying attention and got one bad flyer. How about another B-8?

OK, seven hits in the 10 ring. Can the old country bass player do any better? Here's #3.

AP1GczOmk0lMoBZ-6A7CQ2jjswf94pFPrXoJFnS4Ou3G8xD8DNZwLkX25GtYu4iR_G9mkw1k5CE9gbJtM4ggKueCAEg0Zs1IeT29Ttc2coBZT3df3NdclQQ178PsRcAG3H0VHKQ_rue-dj9LA7OzpM3Si_4hfA=w1648-h927-s-no

Oh drat. More hits in the X ring but still one bad flyer in the 8 ring. I'm down to my last two magazines (10-shot strings) so I'm going to push this one out to 12 yards and see what happens.

Hey! All in the black and all but three in the 10 ring. Let's push it out to 15 yards for the last magazine.

They all stayed on the 8" reactive circle. Cool. Perhaps with a little more practice I can tighten it up at 15 yards.

The fun's not over yet! I'll be back in the next post to show you the XD45 with its laser. Woot!

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi!

I'm back! For the second half of my practice session I brought out the XD45. A few weeks ago when I was practicing in my basement laser range I had tried zeroing the laser at 10 yards just using the iron sights and a laser cartridge along with the G-Sight app and thought I had it pretty close. Can you see the laser dot on the target? The light on this TLR-6 is not very bright but the laser is easy for me to see.

AP1GczMtkP2xh0POsYo02Ne7KU8rL2T0DE49lMfyP9WxXO9ujSllIVlQ6ErifJO9740nHaAxKsnPAY059D9_p-PRopp302_YjqXsWb6cRCtsmwJ1moBx7bXDqWHBJSa7iW9XS8cv9DR1-3O_jPGzcQBLTX_Wag=w1648-h927-s-no

This silhouette is all black so I thought it would be a good test. There's not really a bullseye for these old eyes to focus on. My first five shots came back like this.

AP1GczMeEGNnCXRnG4XH_cU4-GeuJK4hiGW75EfsKtLnx5muoNK2IVF1Cm3SQ9HeTE5inBm3qOf4sEF-iJ4kcbCPXyweAO_Bz04BvicdVooUFTYLPb1fWAzDLby8f8tA98d5ip2bEEyCXfxj--DCiT4g38lQ2g=w1648-h927-s-no

Well hey, that's not too bad. I'm going to try a few more strings before I think about making any more adjustments to the laser zero. I'm going to try a few 4" reactive circles at 10 yards.

AP1GczMsegVroui2IN_D-THajb5psgmP1o2S1IClxC2vs6T3hBqDRMkPuJ5zzrZdXtF2Ho8oP9RSbWYoMH1ZPYJuz8AxJwyKraFqtODxGUkDMpFfTxUVYMxOStyiI4C2dudSOWJ-I0PNo0sWeV_VsFN90-cVvA=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, a couple of flyers low and off the target, but not bad. Here's target #2.

AP1GczMLa8IXbkfxaXdBO1qlNNN4l_JIbJQRDCzON-H3BAx0V05aFlbyN0KFe87Y5eyu1O2FCfd1g6rHm2fg2Pqyvxg5OeG_9BwZJj_88Pb0fqAy6ywLv5lPHMfgC8_36ZMqPQlVF_BJSWFnvCzzUb5EhYZa3A=w1648-h927-s-no

That's a little better with only one hit off the target out of the 10 shot string. I seem to be losing it on target#3, a couple of low flyers.

AP1GczMX319mh9YhzRcVvhmNhDjwAi1BvDWKJ55r1X8Hl6CGJDW8UP1Uxt17g8-UMGpwQXr5FBPJazIJBnrkEac8vDRB8X_BFZkLHq7BnblSDK2xtyBxMS4qiXKjAB5q3TD2yY7oq7J6LaI6jhXSpe-jBHcxJw=w1648-h927-s-no

For target #4 I tried some rapid fire but I didn't quite get back on target for the follow-up shots.

AP1GczODqOQqZt-YxnAKS07VcRVXMS0_ZeIAZ5GVUaNJVpq_0bxhFnogftjQcLXjQgQrkM_BauFxNEbGHPuaEUWTMp9aHjvW-ZJqxO2Aw5N9wp_t1sNDkderq-7z6M-OdUN_a1fe8aS-atls5yE4JFSzLtwsew=w1648-h927-s-no

Then I turned off the laser, put up a B-8 target, and went back to the iron sights, just to be sure I could still do it.

AP1GczMyYCkoA8HI_jlrPVo4ZZdNtj7OufsCPKGWg0gExeo89tQ84W0AEUDa48oje8XEPi9jSDUKfaf0XX3oUf1Et3x4h_kDc6APK1jnVX3SFTLGNQiiBZZD3A1OYjcx_FR6yY2IbLoKt2vn4sHOVIFzT3wViQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I guess that's not too bad. Let's try that again, only this time we'll go out to 12 yards.

AP1GczOC1sJpPiHc927iG3Qd7bBzyCHCrpA_bV7G7dEj-FN1zRzzSjneigjxf4C5J0Jvp7NJSnfrA1BLRWvpembvMc1UWQplErz0FbG8kj6pzFP_2ZGfr2nenDZIKCj2ljqUdlxi39L7-mHSyhOd4s3E_einlQ=w1648-h927-s-no

Drat. That spread out a little. I know I can do better. For this last magazine I'll go out to 15 yards again and turn on the laser just for fun.

AP1GczPmWB8c59K843D7vLVtMgNEFASc6Xicxnkx-yd_iu0YjII3NiQ_u_W9VlJU2RGvLosuY1Gnam2dhMbvdDy5UheVB4dzbwg2WZEzJMePZElSENPv0hs1lC20HfbyWgsKCIGK6tdViNFKc6GLkjStO8qMXQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I probably should've realized sooner that I needed to adjust a couple of inches because the laser is zeroed at 10 yards. I'll remember that the next time I practice with this pistol.

And that's all the fun I had on lane #3, my favorite!

AP1GczPrk0hri9cxSH3vlBHet48ngWnTgrgob09uxNjrHz-w-WSddXsEioZn--IWwAIlbniLtI5x7Mk1tS2h4i4D3loU4Q4xgZPakbkiFcSUtLeWkyzwSezwluCP8gnWgyJaCfRbqMOFdEMdN0b7aXNI-3OTcA=w1648-h927-s-no

I'll save that reactive silhouette for next time. Today was a good day. When using my new optic, I did not turn off the reticle and try the dot only. I did find that my naked eyes could focus better on the optic and target. My shooting glasses have a corrective diopter on top of the right lens so that I can see my front sight clearly. But it makes my optic look blurry. I have other lenses for my shooting glasses without the bi-focal part. Once I'm more accustomed to the optic I'll start some timed drills so that I can "find" the dot quickly when getting to full extension. More stuff to practice. Oh boy! Thanks for putting up with me.

Very good shooting.

Thanks guys,

Looks like the dots and lasers agree with you Cliff.

Zero them all at 13-15 yards. ;)
That’s pretty nice shooting Cliff. Well done. If you zero your laser at 15yds your adjustment from 7-25yds becomes very minimal.

I will tweak the zero on both and test again. I imagine it will take a few sessions to get it "just right" for me. I just might be able to shoot both of these without corrective lenses. 🤓 That'll make me feel young again.
