Hey gang,
I took a quick trip out to the older Fletcher Arms range just for some practice with my new-to-me XD45 Mod2 Tactical, Ruger MarkIV Target, and my (EDC) XD9. I went through 50 rounds of .45, about 75 rounds of 9mm, and 50 rounds of .22LR. My favorite lane #1 was open so I got all my utensils ready.
I had attended a class earlier in the week at the newer facility and had about a half box of 9mm left over. Usually I like to shoot 100 rounds for my 9mm practice session. Today I thought I'd work on quality, not quantity.
But I had another box of ammo handy just in case I wanted to shoot more.
I remembered to bring my new magazines. I had ordered up two new mags for the Mark IV and three new mags for the XD45. Everything worked great today, no malfunctions at all even though this is the third or fourth range trip for these pistols without a cleaning. Shame on me. I'll remedy that this weekend. I started the session with the XD45. So far I've left the TLR-6 in place but I still may remove it once I get a holster for this pistol.
I stuck on a couple of 3" circles to a full size silhouette and sent it out ten yards.
Shooting the first magazine at the top circle, at least I was consistent, I guess.
Since I didn't hit the dang thing one single time I thought I'd try it again. I settled down a little for the second magazine and put most of the hits in the target.
Next, I stuck on an 8" circle for the next couple of magazines.
I shot 50 rounds of .45. That makes for two mags of 13 and two mags of 12 shots. The 8" circle came back with a few flyers. Drat. But There was a ragged hole not too far off center.
Next I'll work out with the Mark IV at 15 yards. I taped up the previous hits and tried a ten shot string on the remaining 3" circle at high center chest. I let one get out of the circle. Double drat.
Let's try that again. This was my best target of the day. I'm really starting to like this target pistol.
I can't help but think that if my eyes were better I could shoot this pistol much more accurately. Take my advice kids, don't get old. Let's try a different target. I like shooting at the A zone on these 1/3 size USPSA targets.
Drat. If you give me the line break I let one hit get out of the Z zone. Let's try another.
Well, I guess that was a slightly tighter group but I still let two hits outside the A zone. I must strive for more steadiness and consistency. Let's stick on another 3" reactive circle and see if the contrast helps my old eyes.
Dang, but that dot looks pretty small at 15 yards. I managed to put all ten hits in the circle.
Still, I'd like to improve this group too. We'll have to see what my eyesight allows me to do after more practice. Perhaps I'll try changing my corrective lenses. I'll let you know. Now I want to practice with my XD9. I taped on a couple of B-8 centers and sent them out to 10 yards. They came back like this. Pretty average. At least all ten hits are on their respective papers.
Then I loaded up four magazines with what I had left, 15 or 16 shots each. I pulled out the 12x18 reactive silhouettes. The first target looked like this after a couple of magazines.
For the last couple of magazines I shot pretty rapidly, not as fast as I could, but less than one second between shots. The last target came back like this.
One of these days I will, at least, keep all these hits inside the 9 ring on this target. Then I'll tighten it up from there. That's the goal. Then I'll increase the distance like I have with the Mark IV. I don't mind practicing. It's fun. One of these days I'll make you proud. Until then, thanks for putting up with me, the good, the bad, the ugly, warts and all.
Then I stopped by across the street to pick up one of my favorite adult beverages and made my way home past all the dirty mounds of snow. It's 34° with light rain and just making a wintry mess.
This part of winter is no fun. I like the white fluffy snow. Maybe we'll get some more next month. But I digress.
