Range Report: Target Practice w/Daughter, 3/16/23

Greetings friends and neighbors,

Earlier this week my middle daughter met me at Fletcher Arms for some practice putting holes in paper. We shared lane #10, which just happens to be my favorite lane!

We brought out most of our favorite handguns to practice with, daughter's Sig P238 and my Garrison, XD9, and P22.

After warming up with her Sig in .380 she shot a magazine with the XD9 at the B-8 ten yards away.

Hey! Look at that! She shoots the XD9 just about as well as I do. I guess that's not hard to do.

OK, it's my turn. Let's see what I can do on the B-8 at ten yards.

I had given daughter a couple of new magazines for her .380, she had only one. I was helping her to do emergency reloads. She needs more practice but is getting the hang of it.

I put up a new target with some 4" reactive bulls to see if I could "aim small, miss small". I guess I'm getting there.

Only nine hits on the above target because one of the WWB cartridges was a dud. I also had several FTE malfunctions out of the hundred rounds I shot today. I'm going to continue shooting it until it's gone and never by any more.

Here's daughter with the P22. We shot at 10 yards the whole session. She enjoys the reactive targets. It's easier for these old eyes to see the hits too.

We were just having a whole lot of fun with this target. The P22 does well once you figure out the sight picture and hold. Daughter loves shooting it.

Daughter went back to the XD9. She did not shoot the .45 today. It's a bit too heavy and has a bit more kick than she likes.

We were sharing this target. I was actually starting to get dialed in, shooting at the shoulder dots with the XD9 and P22.

Then we had some fun with a small reactive silhouette. We pounded it with the XD9, P22, and me with the Garrison.

My .45 hits are not quite as low/left as they were last week. The XD9 hits are getting close. Daughter was still trying to figure out her sight picture for the P22.

I tried a clean target with my Garrison. OK, I can see some improvement. This was ten hits at ten yards.

I had a few magazines of 9mm left so I hurled them at my last reactive silhouette, thirty shots at center mass, twenty head shots.

Then for grins and giggles, I ran a 10-10-10 drill with my P22. It's a little different using this little gun.

OK, I had six more .22 cartridges left in the box. I stuck on a 4" circle and tried my best at ten yards. Looks like I put five hits actually on the reactive with one that flew high and right. Drat.

Now I'm out of ammo so I guess it's time to leave. It was raining but there are still big piles of snow everywhere. Spring is not too far away.

I do enjoy range days with my daughter. One of these days her husband will show up. He's part owner of the family business now and tends to put in a lot of hours. His off time is spent being a great Dad to my granddaughters. But I'll get him out here one day soon. I'd love to get into a little shootin' match with his G17.

I've got another live fire defensive class tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to more scootin' and shootin'. I'll let you know if I have any fun.

good for you, good for her. i too am seeing more gals at the gun store(s) and ranges.....this is good, for thier own self protection, when they are alone with the kids, or out shopping or something.

i found it "funny" not in a humorous way however, that she was at the end port..that is what i like best too...no one on both sides of me, only to my left..then too, the main reason why i like the end ports, is so that no one steps on my brass...!!!

then with only another shooter to my left..??

i get to sweep up his/her brass as well....lol..........truth be told, at the public range, the RSO (the guy i bought the Dillon set up from), let's me sweep all the brass i want, many days i do.....

i reload my brass, and "some brass" that meets my desirable list, like (brass) 38 specials, 9mm, 45 ACP...

the rest, i sift out the dirt/dust (from the floor sweepings) and toss them into the recycling pail that i have, i especially toss away brass (into the recycling pail) from Aquila (Mexican), .22's, .380's, any rifle brass, and if any steel or nickel plated casings are swept up, those get tossed into the trash can.

here, brass shell casings are going for at least 10¢ less than plumbing brass, and the price fluctuates every day.

but the last time i took brass to the recycling yard?

which i STILL have a receipt for..???

which is dated....March 16, 2022....

was $2.00 per pound, and for 96 pounds, i walked away with $192.00

i took that cash, and bought all new factory ammo, cannot recall what caliber, but most likely 45 ACP, and 9mm, maybe some 38 specials.....

Way back in the dark ages when I was 17. In the summer, for a 2nd job, I was an Environmental Sanitation Engineer which meant I ran the town dump. One of the things I got was precious metal rights. Back then Copper was going for .76 per pound and brass was usually about .25 less. Used to also get .50 per ft for corrugated tin panels. Used to also have my High School's secretary bring me a stack of magazines about 3 ft tall once a month, all tied up with a Good Housekeeping on top and a Redbook on the bottom the rest of them was about every smut magazine made, half of them in foreign languages that her husband subscribed to and once a month my High School principal used to stop by and buy all the smut I had collected for .50 per copy. Little did he know that it was his secretary throwing them away every month...

Red brass is around 2.50. Yellow is around 2.25.

By the way, do not mix ammo brass with regular brass. It has to be cleaned separately and if you have it mixed with other brass you will get the lowest price.

Copper incidentally is up over 3 bucks right now.

Hi guys,

Thanks all! My daughter and I have a fun time at the range. I do my best to teach her what I've learned. She has my two little granddaughters to protect.

I finally got around to editing this little video. I'd never shot a 10-10-10 drill with my little Walther P22. For my first time, this wasn't horrible, 94 points under part time.
