Range Report: Two Fridays In A Row, 10/13+20/23

BassCliff

Professional
Hello boys and girls,

I made it out to the range the last couple of Fridays and wanted to show you a good example of how NOT to shoot. The weather is starting to cool off here in the Wild Wild Upper Midwest and it was a rainy drive out to the facility. One good thing about indoor ranges is that they are pretty much weather agnostic.

For this practice session I brought only my two "target" pistols, Mark IV and XDM Elite.

ADCreHcl3x6i6uYmvHpxE-5a-O3QYNry8sqnl0WxUm9a8kHkGD83n6GqRe_izEjMIhzVzUhgTay3_PdcpeHjWjg0CGU8A-IMxIOgcmuCbXPcGyP2mvas7V6TYYgh4dL3gE-UoMvbLoFk7YqLv5cJZlg5pyJOVw=w1236-h927-s-no

One of these days I must get more magazines for my Ruger. It's a bit time consuming having to load up those two 10 round units every time. I can put that whole box of 100 rounds of AAC 9mm 124 grain in those five XDM magazines. Those have the extender plates and hold 22 rounds each. Pretty handy.

This was my first B-8 target using the Elite. I thought the 5.25" sight radius would help me. I suppose it does. I actually think it's the trigger I'm not yet used to.

Even though I loaded all the mags with 20 rounds I'm just shooting 10 shot strings on each target. And I won't bore you with all my other mediocre targets. As you can see, even after warming up a bit, target #5 is not all that much better. I'm taking my eye off the front sight when I pull. Shame on me.

I thought a change in targets would do me good. I guess it helped a little. I shot a few of these little USPSA silhouettes. This was the best one.

I'm still shooting at 10 yards for this session. That A zone is about 2.5" x 3.5". I managed to get seven hits fairly close. Then I had another bright idea for motivation. I'll use this diagnostic correction chart.

Drat. I guess I still suck a bit. At least I didn't have to leave the range. OK, let's have a look at that B-8 target before we change it out.

It almost looks impressive but you have to remember that I've put 90 rounds through that target. I saved a 12"x18" reactive silhouette target for my last ten rounds. I sent it out to 10 yards and this is how it came back. I guess I did some damage but I won't win any trophies.

Then I shot a few magazines using the Ruger Mark IV. Since I didn't damage the last target all that much I just patched it up and tried to get 20 more hits on it.

I knew I could do better so I stuck on an 8" reactive circle. It came back with a little tighter group of 20 hits.

And that's about all the fun I had last Friday. I'll tell you about yesterday in the next post. Thanks for looking!

Hi,

Let's continue!

Yesterday I visited the closer facility of which I am a member. I got my favorite lane.

ADCreHfEAZr-HyUJcz58i8ZvqptxnxSHX9cNSROHoHRDm0QSmvtZMmBome1p8OBtMMDmGxETZvgS1t6Om2RNCyXcLvkyEOSzprvguOo9aPLCUKb6Z8GF_dqkc4Tb8qoX8-h8uXPUVM8ZSTcczQ-kEZ562R7ciA=w1647-h927-s-no

For today, since I hadn't practiced with my EDC for a while, I used the XD9 and the Mark IV. For ammo I brought a couple of odd boxes of 115 grain 9mm, not my normal training ammo, and trying to finish up those big boxes of .22LR.

ADCreHe0zI18w4nTD_z083dXMgkB-1U8xWTo_SQjp8WQqpWSMy2RumMiQRgFdA2RiTzAwD3zGEX5mXXw4qKkaBTrHZ2fp7O-BLI51dALLStj8Bq3wUwp3OUXOVCHOtY8MOyaOdJRm1Yf4_qdWjuvSsoXbfWSlA=w1647-h927-s-no

Again shooting at ten yards, my first B-8 was nothing to write home about.

ADCreHfn1V347QVPY6Lsfsramt55dGu_1IFn9QBYJ3ulkxLlalA6SwTqV3Frq6h8404eEQA7h-IOvwRJlPq5WjvEj4j-dnbG2YHLAtmd4JP47qmZgq8XJeW32bUEAotrFwVS2UdvHtgZb7EA1k0nBSOYHD1-ng=w1647-h927-s-no

I shot a few more average ten hit strings until target #5 finally started shaping up.

ADCreHdJ8e-A5K4WFOvxRWfLivi9HgMNwG8dYj3fwTdm9dWMSlwnxFxosT73wl7EXnZfjiH656nFkBa9nN0oaRh0fb0fanLGEPno5YtjwdXrUg63By1sdA0izBNCz322TyxIkp-YzwF6xjjsIrDw96v2jHoFpA=w1647-h927-s-no

For target #6 I wanted to go for a big ragged hole so I stuck on an 8" reactive circle and put 50 rounds through it. I'd like to tighten up this group a bit more. I'll keep practicing until it happens.

ADCreHcSX6zig9G5jv5xwwX-foRcjNB6_9a3nX6IiY1nGPrAv9ytF4_6qpBro0Spozk3MiIc1UsIYUY2TC2RGW3BybdqopogYch3D6sPh0ZJzQOitDpyRJO0l0r-0siv3UYGBHGRH39svQ9toOGfG-idwQwg-Q=w1647-h927-s-no

Now let's work with the Mark IV for a bit. I stuck on some 4" reactive circles to this silhouette and tried to put 10 hits on each, plus the bullseye center.

ADCreHfgV31mWFtPkDAzjB8Mp7nN1xT328wMz3adkWxG1GTZq7TD8Ga4iMhXOs_K7Eyq3NCgJfVt5iwzIvX01DS6BsxHghfkStU-n1UxLeiPXblWZbuvA91aVR4dI1lnTHv0dvcT80y4VPBNeldsO_5Mc7df8A=w522-h927-s-no

If you give me a couple of line breaks I do believe I kept all the hits in 4" groups or less. The bullseye has only one hit outside the red. Here's a close-up.

ADCreHelYvCWtMFbvrYxSEjRJM-n8etqmmHY1x5iOUrGZDz3xcRxAPQWg0TX8DaxiLcgg9F522G7HtzdH4i4p4J5IZ4dIwazoxfuOuMVUqxgVXj7g7MOn9yX6My05PsNp8M4IEY_HJ0-kGM3ZqOsFoDlKwXOvw=w1647-h927-s-no

Then I taped on a mini-USPSA silhouette and dang near put 20 hits inside the A zone.

ADCreHeTgizz8AA2EI2aw3MPqLfgFPInADjbz4t80qEAvgcjCjMIFe_FCPCSCNLG1IMZAOvWY67rvCoXF8r2i4zoehd6qgcAHg2Mm2jAgEDQ2HmgsLZP0DKnKXvfEZ2s8sG6HnMzXtwyBnqq-zd-TVslnpAoSw=w1647-h927-s-no

Psssst! Look at that upper left circle. You'll give me that line break, right? ;) All in all, it was a fun time and I did learn a little adjustment to my grip so as to keep the sight picture more steady through the trigger pull. I'm still taking baby steps but I think I'll get off of this plateau soon. Thanks for hanging around with me. You guys are the best.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hey everyone!

Thanks for stopping by and bringing your cheer. If you like, I'll attach that "suck" target. Maybe I'll start using that one more so that I'm better motivated. ;) Print out a few and be the first on your range to not suck. :ROFLMAO:

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
