Rear sight notch red dot mounting plate

UC_Guy 1971

I have installed a red dot mount that fits into the rear sight notch of a Ruger Security 9 Compact. Don't know if I am a fan but the factory sights are pretty.... uhm. Well, uneventful. The rear factory sight has a screw that holds it in place. The Lakeline LLC mount has you use that same hole to keep the mount in place and centered.

They offered two different mounts. One is a standard(?) and the other is a low profile(?). I don't really know if there is a big difference other than the low-pro having a RMSc set-up. I went with the low-pro and should have it and a Sig Romeo Zero relatively soon. They also offered a front, fiber-optic sight to pair with the the integrated rear sight notch found in about half of the dots out there now. I ordered one of those too and put an orange fiber into it.

Now having said all of that. Has anyone mounted a dot like this? If so has it raised the the dot up considerably? Has it proven to be sturdy enough to handle being carried all of the time and stay true? Is it as awkward as it looks?

I had considered having the slide milled but realized that I will probably never carry it. It really is just a project gun. I got it for a song and..... it's teal. Plus it feels cheap. The sights kind of proved it's cheapness (not that Glock plastic sights are anything to write home about). The trigger is really nice, but it's teal. It has an external safety; a plus for me. There is a short rail for a light or laser. The finish on the slide looks like something Jennings would use. At the end of the day I don't have enough peach, salmon or antique ivory colored clothing to compliment a teal pistol

At the risk of telling you your baby is ugly and I don’t want to do that but here goes

I’ve only seen a couple by folks on the range and both had issues holding zero and became loose

I also went to Dave Spaulding’s MRDS (Red Dot) class before he retired and he advised to stay away from those and the class consensus made up of Red Dot folks were the same and they were gimmicks.

So all that said even if you don’t shoot it a ton I would be concerned about it holding zero from getting holstered and canted every which way in a holster if you IWB carry

I have one on a TX22 that works ok, but is not elegant and it is a range toy. I personally would not put one on an SD gun for all the reasons you mentioned. Every millimeter of additional height on a red dot has a noticeable effect on POI, which is why it’s important to keep the optic as low as possible.

Oh no, it's ugly.... No argument; it's teal.

Also I no worry about it losing zero due to movement or similar. This pistol has a screw for the factory rear sight. It's screwed onto to the slide as well as in a "Novak" style notch.

Does it just have one screw like a rear sight?

If it’s a fire extinguisher hin you will probably be alright however if you shoot semi regular I have seen several folks with several screws on their milled and mounted Red Dot that comes loose so there’s that!

It's a big screw. A big screw with blue loctite. ;) Do I trust it. Not yet; time will tell.
