Recommended Scope for My M1A

That’s not a bad choice at all; I find a lot of people put way too powerful scopes on their rifles (seriously; unless you’re capable of reaching over 1/2 mile—880yds—do you REALLY need that 25x56mm celestial scope?).

You might want to step up to a 2-12 or a 3-15, but…realistically? That 1-8 will do fine for anything within a quarter mile.

I guess it depends on if you get a deal or not. I'm totally happy with a 4.5-30x50 for 200 yards. :)

As my eyes are fading with age I have mounted the Springfield 4th Gen Alum Scope mount on my M1A ( I trained on M-14's in the Army back in the 60's before they issued the Mattel M16 to me when I got to Nam) Still love my M1-A. What scope would you recommend to me.
Looking at a Vortex Strike Eagle in 1x8 30MM with Illuminated reticule.
I love my Vortex 1x8 and its on a .308.
Will do just great for that rifle.

From what I have read and helped a buddy scope his M1A. The problem lies more in getting a good mount over picking a good optic. My friend ended up with a Picatinny rail that went 3/4s down the front of his barrel. That gave him plenty of room to mount an Extended Eye Relief scope to make it easier on him. A new optic I just ordered for my T/C handgun and will work great for this scenario is Riton Optics brand new 3 Primal 3-9X40 EER scope. 5 inches of eye relief will make it easy to mount the optic in a scout rifle style. I have their 3 Primal 3-12X56 on 2 rifles and have zero complaints. The EER optic should work great on my hand cannon.

Well I installed my Vortex Strike Eagle 1x8 on my Springfield Gen 4 Aluminum Scope Mount for my M1-A. I did exactly how Vortex instructed on their Utube Video. Using the Torque Specifications that they recommended.
I laser sighted it and took it out to my 100 yard range. Shot it and got it on the target. Proceeded to attempt to dial it in!! That's when the trouble started. I would fire a shot on make the correction as I normally do. Should have been zeroed after 2 to 3 shots. WRONG, One shot would be fine the next one might be 4- 5 inches off!! The loads are very accurate Nosler 168 gr match behind IMR 4895. Use that load on my 8 other 308 Rifles. Took my M1A scout out with a zero power Red Dot sight and proceeded to put 3 shots within a 1 inch group. So I knew it wasn't me or the load that was at fault.
Came home and searched Utube about the Gen 4 Scope mount. Lo and behold I'm not the only one that has had problems with the Mount. Some had given up on it and others said to re-tighten the Mount. So I have done that and will take it back out today to see if it improves.
Plus the Rifle failed to eject completely on about every 4 round?? Never had that problem before. Ruined the brass when it only ejected half way. Not sure what is causing that.
Any suggestion?

As you've discovered SA M1A mounts are sub-par, as are most of those advertised on the net.

If you want a quality M1A mount go with either a Sadlak...

or an ARMS...

Beat me to it.

Personally, I’d go Sadlak…

I use a couple of the original ARMS 18 Gen 1 split rail mounts. They are considered the lowest M1A/M14 mounts, but are unobtainable now (and highly sought after) since ARMS went to a full rail design.

Since then I've gone with the Sadlaks.

I haven't tried the Brookfield-type mounts but they are highly regarded.

Fulton & Mounting Solutions Plus offer Brookfield-type mounts, but don't know if they're the same or just different variations on the Brookfield-theme..

IMO opinion, I would go anywhere near any of the other mounts other than the Sadlak, ARMS & two Brookfield-type mounts. I could use stronger language for anything else. :sneaky:

If you want to go the Scout-mount way the Ultimak M8 is the best available.

FYI, the Scout Hand Guard (SHG) from M14.ca is better than the Ultimak M8 because it's lighter, it disperses heat quicker and there is a version for Medium weight barrels.

Go the scout version, and you won't regret it. That's why I made my comment earlier about Extended Eye Relief scopes. It does take a little practice but it will become easier each time.
