Retiring a Gun to the Safe

Oaktree45

Custom
I had decided to retire my 9mm Taurus PT-111 Millennium as my nightstand pistol and replace it with a similar size pistol. My plan was to wait until the crazy prices of guns and ammo was over but that didn’t happen. I was at my local sporting goods store yesterday looking for ammo and I noticed they had a Taurus G2c in their gun case with a price of $249.00 so I bought it. Magazine capacity is 12 rounds. It also has an adjustable rear sight that adjusts for both windage and elevation. I’ll be taking it to the local gun range later today to see how it performs.
I know a lot of people pooh pooh Taurus but my PT-111 and my Taurus M44 have been dependable and accurate. I’ve owned both guns for 20 years.

Here's a picture of the old and the new.

Actually I like both of my XD's so much that I was thinking of buying a Hellcat if one showed up at any of the guns stores I visit but the price of the Taurus sucked me in before a Hellcat showed up. :)
I have a Hellcat, but my brother was a first time gun buyer and wanted something cheap. So I did research for him and learned a lot about the G2C and recommended it to him. They had one at the LGS and he went and bought it. I’m looking forward to shooting it with him. I don’t think you can do any better for the money.

Grats on the new purchase...I like it !! ...be aware there are people, companies and gov agencies that 'follow' these forums and collect serial numbers, weapon descriptions , names and addresses...show pics from other side, not quite as nice but we can still admire.

The only Taurus I have ever owned was a model 85 .38 special snub nose. It was a good firearm although double action pull weight was bit high. Now you can get spring kits to lighten the pull weight though.

ThatG2c is a nice looking gun.

I’ve owned a few Taurus products. My PT709 Slim did have an extractor break within the first 500 rounds, and I wasn’t too happy about Taurus charging for shipping to repair it. I also have a PT92 that has spent as much time at the factory as at the range. However, my 856 and TX22 have run flawlessly. The TX22 is probably the most reliable rimfire pistol I’ve ever owned. Taurus definitely seems to be improving.

My PT111 Pro shot well and was totally reliable. I sent it in at the beginning of the recall on the info that they would repair and return it. Lo and behold they changed their minds, ruled it unsafe, and sent me a G2, which frankly I didn’t like as much. Sold it for an XDS

I've spent enough time here espousing my opinion of Taurus semi autos, so I won't repeat myself here. I will say one of my favorite handguns in the world is my 30 year old Taurus M44 Magnum with 8 3/8" barrel. It is a fine revolver and has killed a lot of deer.

I took the G2c to the range yesterday and I put one box of ammo through it. Not enough for a good evaluation but here are a couple of my thoughts. Similar to the PT-111 the trigger pull is long but I had no trouble adjusting to it. I only shot at 7 yards and at that range I felt it was extremely accurate. I really like the pinky extension on the magazine which makes it much more comfortable to shoot compared to the PT-111.

Field stripping the G2c is simple and easy. For some reason, I always had to use a needle nose pliers to remove the take down pin in my PT-111. I always thought after a few cleanings it would become easier but it never did. Maybe I’m just a weakling.

To me, the recoil spring on the G2c looks cheap and the finish on the outside of the barrel doesn’t impress me either. I’m not complaining though because it seems like you get a lot of pistol for the money. I guess time will tell.

After twice replacing the RSA in my buddies G2C I talked him into a Lakeline RSA. No problems with it ( The RSA)since.

It was just last year when I discovered there had been a recall on my PT-111 Millennium that had closed in 2018. I had bought the gun new in June 2000 and sent in the warranty card yet I never received a recall notice. Since the pistol had a life time warranty on it I decided to call Taurus today to see if they would repair the gun. Their customer service was excellent and they told me when they received the gun from me they would destroy it and send a G2c to me (via my FFL dealer). I was actually hoping they would repair the gun because it is like an old friend.

Hopefully I'll never have to use Springfield Armory's customer service but if I do I hope they are as good as my experience was with Taurus.

Well the deed is done. Taurus emailed a FedEx prepaid shipping label to me and yesterday I sent it off to Taurus. Goodbye old friend, I'm sorry to send you in to be euthanized. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for Taurus to ship the replacement pistol to my FFL dealer.
