Great post and great article, right now and for the forcible future my M1A is my only long gun. I really like the platform and walnut wood and steel of this iconic battle rifle. I also like the .308 round.
I’m looking forward to putting more rounds down range this year and may go out on Saturday with the temperatures going to be in the high 70’s

What an incredible beautiful rifle.
And yes with everything going on in the world it’s loaded and ready to rock.

Question regarding this rifle. I am an iron sights shooter with very little experience using optics. I have read/been told that the sights on this rifle are good enough for shooting out to 500 yards. I am planning on buying one in the fall and want to know if I'll need glass or not for shooting. I won't be using it for hunting, likely just target shooting. Probably going to get it chambered in .308. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

The Iron sights are good. My eyes are not.
A fellow shooter of mine can shoot my M1A out to 300 yards on irons on a 24” plate with good center hits. So I know it can be done on the stock irons. 300 yards is all we had available at the time.
Me, no way in heck without a good optic, so I have a nice scope on it now.

I'm turning 50 in October, and the close up vision is fading as I have to wear readers for small print. I suppose I need to find out if my eyes are still good enough to make a shoot out to 500 yards without glass before I go much further. If you don't mind me asking, what type of scope to you have mounted to yours?

I'm 53 and started needing cheaters a couple years ago. Either that or my arms are getting shorter. Long range vision ( so far) remains unchanged.

Nevertheless, at 500 yards I would want a scope. At least 18x magnification, side parallax knob, fast focus eyepiece and at least a 50 mm objective lens. Best one you can afford. Vortex is making good quality scopes at an affordable price. Maybe the only ones in their price range that are worth it these days.

When I first shot my M1A I used the iron sights and it was very accurate out to 150 yards, with my older eyes I need an optic so I went with a Sig Sauer Sierra3BDX

What is the accuracy of your rifles? Have any of you seen the video below discussing accuracy issues?

Interesting video thanks for sharing David, I’m not arrogant to say I’m a marksman but I truly believe that every shooter as well as every gun is different so I won’t respond to the testing results of what they were shooting in the video however my results were different.
The scope on my M1A is a Sig Sauer Sierra3BDX 4.5-14X44mm and as mentioned in a previous post I did shoot my M1A with iron sights but my 64 year old eyes need a scope for long distance.
And again my results were different.

The holes off the target are from previous handgun shooting, the holes on target are .308 out of my M1A at 150 yards after zeroing the scope at 100 yards, this was done last year and I haven’t been out this year yet I’m looking forward to seeing if I can repeat those groups at 200, 250 and 300 yards.
Am I an expert? Not even close, is the gun a perfect weapon for a sniper? I can’t say that but what I can say is the gun shoots really good, at least mine does.
