Not sure about the P-Rail but that is a nice looking gun.

It is removable, it can come off. Just a few machine screws bolting it down.

Hmm.

I could go either way; a 4” S&W K, L, or N frame .357 magnum would do, and cover pretty much every realistically conceivable situation.

Or:

A 1911 with a .22 conversion.

Probably, though...if it was something in my collection? The 28-2 Highway Patrolman, or the 686 no dash; both 4”.

I would go with a pistol. The .40 \ 357 Sig type.

Revolver, SW model 60. Small enough to conceal, large enough to be used for a hunting arm in a pinch. I have always been partial to revolvers and if push comes to shove, literally, it goes bang even in bad breath encounters, where a pistol might be knocked out of battery.
