Warship Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024: Ignore the orders, we will save the Sailors

Above we see, some 80 years ago today, the cramped deck of the tiny “WGT” (John C. Butler-class) destroyer escort USS Tabberer (DE-418), crowded with shocked and waterlogged survivors of the lost destroyers USS Spence (DD 512) and USS Hull (DD 350). LCDR James A. Marks, USN, the former skipper of Hull, is being brought aboard to the left.

How had Tabberer survived the tempest that sent a trio of three larger greyhounds to the bottom?

oh how i miss the days
this pic sort of shows some rolling, and the stern a bit below horizon
it was near malta
we had to stay inside the hangar as they were worried we may wash away
the rolls were pretty gnarly, but the pitch was intense, bow would lurch from the waves high in the air and waves would wash over the stern...and chase us off the deck

The article says the USS Tabberer rolled to 72 deg. and survived whereas her three sisters went farther, up to 80 deg., and capsized.

72 OMG thats brutal
we did a few that i have no idea how far, but the bulkheads looked to be close to 45 or more you could walk up on the wall as it was
ships make nasty noises on rolls like that....scary noises , very scary
