SIG P-229 MAG ISSUES

I recently purchased a P-229, it came with 2 15 round mags and I purchased 4 more. Loaded 15 rounds in two mags a little over a month ago. I checked on the loaded mags today and I was only able to thumb two rounds from each. The springs were compressed and the remaining rounds were loose, no compression. I smacked the mags on a table trying shake the springs loose, they stayed compressed. I really hate to send them back, guess I'll just get some aftermarket springs. Has anyone had this problem?

I was pretty surprised. These mags are about 50 bucks each. I have to admit the two that had this problem are the ones that came with the pistol. Gonna load up one of the newer ones hopefully they will be ok.

Should have said mag springs were not pushing up on the rounds, they stayed compressed.

None of mine have done that but i don't keep them loaded. a month is not a long time on a spring

I have an AR 180 mag that's been loaded for about 25 years and still has tension.

Sounds like they are hung up. did you take them apart and look to see?

I swap out the mags every two months on my S&W M&P EDC and never have had a problem with the mag springs.

Not yet this only happened about an hour ago. I will do that.

The follower is probably in a bind, i can't see a spring going bad that early. unless it was tempered wrong.

I'm on your side but both mag springs were compressed. Don't know if it makes any difference these two mags have parkerized finishes. The four I ordered have smooth blue finishing.

Try that and reload them.

As Beltfed said (in not as many words), springs do not wear out by being held compressed. They wear out from repeated coiling-and-uncoiling (compression-and -decompression). IF the springs were made from the proper steel (and they were formed to spec), the springs are not the problem.

That’s pretty unusual for Sig mags. Get yourself some Mec Gars.

This is the first time these mags have been loaded.

Just finished inspecting the mags, no burrs, no binding. Reloaded them with 15 rounds. One stayed compressed, the other was very weak. Also tried one of the newer mags no problems but it hadn't stayed loaded for a month. Guess I'll order new springs. Ain't life a bi**h?

Call sig and tell them the deal, they may just send you new springs or even new mags. sometimes they have great CS and sometimes not. just depends on who answers the phone. it's worth a shot.

I got a load of Mec-Gars on sale years back for my P228s and they've never failed me. I have a few "off brand" mags I picked up at gun shows along the way and most were crap. I have the original 10 rounders that came with the guns but they stay in the drawer. If you get them apart, check the inside walls to make sure the followers can track smoothly. If not, send them back or call and let them know.
