SOG KNIVES

Anyone ever use SOG Knives ? I carry a Gerber, Crkt or Benchmade pocket knife everyday. At work I usually have at least 2 on me at all times. Still waiting for the 2 Benchmades I just ordered last week to arrive. Anyways in the mean time I just heard about SOG and their products. Any information would be appreciated.

They're ok. Certainly not in the same league as Benchmade, but a decent EDC knife.

The only info I have for you is BENCHMADE!!! Lifetime Guarantee. Can't go wrong there. I carry a Barrage for EDC and a Nimravus for out in the desert. They have served me well. If you are serious about knives, check out stats for the metals, etc.

Back in the 1980's when SOG started they were pretty innovative and well made either in the USA or Japan. Now not so much. They aren't bad but on par with brands like Gerber most of the time and Cold Steel. Benchmade is a cut above but is really overpriced for what they make much of the time. I like Zero Tolerance and Spyderco better than all of those. And brands like Spartan Blades, Chris Reeve and Microtech are far better than Benchmade and the others.

I own Microtech and Benchmade. I wouldn’t put Microtech above Benchmade in quality. And I’d rate Spyderco lower than both.
There are exceptions to every generalization and I would say that there are certainly some Benchmades that are nicer then some Spydercos and some Microtechs. But IMO the trend with Benchmade has been lower quality and higher price since they went factory direct to dealers some years ago. I have had some gold class BM's that are very very nice. But the general production stuff is getting too expensive for what it is. I can still get Spyderco, Microtech and ZT at wholesale but only about 30% off BM; and even disregarding the better price I think most of the models from BM are a bit lower in quality, strength and design than the others. That said I still own probably ten BM's but some have been disappointing at their price point. For instance in a small light lockback I found the Bugout line to be expensive and not as nice as many similar models. Some of the others were more expensive and some were less but almost all of these were better knives.

Two from BM that I do like are the Adamas series and the Sibert 7505 series.

Very nice collection .

Many years ago, when I was still a commercial diver, I always carried these two knives when on a working dive. One was a Spyderco Saltwater Atlantic, and the other was a cheap Big Chief. A small shackle on each to keep them clipped on my diving harness. I can't even begin to tell you the number of times each was used on the job. While working on deck I always carried another Spyderco serrated knife. Big Chiefs were cheap and easy to sharpen. I didn't care so much if they broke or were lost. And the Sypderco sharpening kit for serrated knives kept my blades sharp.

Well a personal preference thing I reckon. I like the Bugout a lot and have a couple of them. The axis lock is a superior system and S30v and CruWear are two of my favorite steels. I probably have about 10 Benchmades ranging from the $350-$150 range and I like them all. My Microtech UTX85 ( M390) is a great knife too, but other than their OTFs I’m not impressed with their line. And nothing from Spyderco excites me.

Chris Reeves is one I don’t yet own, but will. Just can’t bring myself to wait in line for it. Yet.

I bought my niece’s fiancée an Ontario Rat 1.5 for an upcoming birthday. It showed up last night. Taiwan made and under $100 but a really nice knife with a well ground Magnacut blade. One of my favorite knife reviewers tested it on the Rockwell and it averaged 64. Pretty unusual for Magnacut.

This my entire EDC knife "collection".

They are arranged from the ones I carry most often to those I carry least.

Victorinox Climber/Gerber Multitool

Buck 110 LTE /Buck 110 Slim Select.
BM 710/BM Griptilian
Bucklite 422 (Ranger) /Buck 110
BM Bugout/ Victorinox Sentinel.

The climber lives in my gym bag so it gets carried every time I go to the gym. Multi-tool gets carried anytime I'm wearing pants regardless of what other knife I'm carrying.

All of the Bucks are basically Buck 110s or Buck Rangers with polymer handles ( except ,of course, the actual Buck 110).

I would really like a Benchmade barrage but I just can't justify the price and I don't see it doing anything that one of my 110s won't do

Well it could not have been that many years ago, because the H1 Spyderco hasn't been around too long. I also worked as a Diver on the left coast, the Gulf of Mexico, Baltimore and internationally. Most recently in Hawaii for a submarine company until I moved back to the mainland and retired about 2 years ago These are some of the knives I used in the water.

Barrage is a really nice knife. I like mine a lot.
