Yes, is one business tactic. It works well to a point. There’s another reason for retailers pricing an in-demand item (in this case, ammo) high:
It actually keeps more of it available for more buyers.
If the price it cheap, people will come in, buy it all, and resell it. Even if retailers ration it, people find work arounds (and we’ve seen people here talk about doing just that in other threads)—have friends, wives, kids, etc buy ammo for them—not necessarily for reselling, but because “the price is good, and I need more”.
However: if the price is high, people will buy just what they need to get by, there won’t be a profit margin in reselling, so there will be more for others.
In a way, it actually prevents gouging (the hyperinflated resale market).
For the moment, Federal Punch 124gr ammo is still available at the Federal site for $18.99 per box, 2 box limit. Better hurry.

Millions of new gun owners that never bought ammo have no clue that 9mm was $8.00 for a box of 50.
so any price the store sells it for, the new consumer has no price comparison from “a previous purchase ”, so the store can get top dollar
Got my two box "ration" last night.I bought 2 a half hour ago. $52.xx w/ tax and shipping.
Thanks for the head's up brother.
Seems steep to me. I bought some Winchester white box a couple months ago for $16/box. Barring some sort of catastrophic emergency I won't be spending $30+ on a 50 round box of 9mm ball ammo.Picked up two boxes of Sellier and Bellot 115 gr FMJ for $33.00 a box earlier. If there had not been a two-box limit I would have definitely gone for more.
I just looked at Cheaper Than Dirt again, and Man... they are still high as a cat’s back..
I’ve only bought from them a few times - I prefer supporting LGS - but they’ve lost my biz completely...
Ammo situation will be like gas was 10-15 yrs ago (I cant quite recall the year of that crunch). Gas was , like, $1.60/gal, and shot up to almost or at $4.00 within a year.
When it dropped to $2.00- what, approx 2 yrs later? - everyone went “whew! Thank goodness!” I had to remind friends that No, we weren’t back to ‘normal’ - normal had changed for good. They’d forgotten already...
Is ammo gonna be the same? Drop back down, but from here on at least $10/box higher than before Covid.
Yeah, I concur...25-50%...Hans believes ( and I pretty much agree with him) that the new normal will be about a 50% increase from pre covid prices.
Agreed, is why stated to slack off buying ammo. Is about only way seen to combat inflationary pricing.Hans believes ( and I pretty much agree with him) that the new normal will be about a 50% increase from pre covid prices.

Is typical trend to most any inflated product like gasoline. - It's an often repeated cycle.
May hurt somewhat now, but we'll likely see results of higher price ammo later once dust is cleared if don't slack off now? It may not feel like it currently, but consumers still set actual prices. Way over priced "whatever" can sit on shelf and collect dust as far as I'm concerned.
One thing with and to conserve gas to help is to consolidate, plan routes and trips in loops.Yeah, I concur...25-50%...
only thing is, we all pretty much HAVE to buy gas.
Once demand/supply corrects, we’ll be able to shop around more for our ammo. That’ll help.
But manufacturers will never let it go down to the old price levels.
